The global top 200
Chinese contractors have increased their
dominance at the top of the
iC
ranking
of the world’s 200 largest construction
companies.
Chris Sleight
reports.
The
global
top 200
T
his year’s ranking of the world’s 200 largest construction
companies not only sees China’s five largest players
cement their positions inside the global top ten, but it
has also seen the emergence of the world’s first US$ 100 billion+
per year contractor – China State Construction & Engineering
(CECEC).
As in last year’s rankings, the top three places are occupied
by Chinese state-controlled companies in the shape of CSCEC
and the two major rail construction groups, China Railway
Construction (2) and China Railway Group (3). All three saw
significant growth in 2013, the year the rankings are based on,
with the gap to fourth-paced Vinci widening. Last year there
was a US$ 25 billion gulf between the third and fourth placed
companies. This year that stands at nearly US$ 35 billion.
Elsewhere in the top ten, the only change from last year has
been China Communications Construction (5) swapping places
with Spain’s ACS (6). If the company’s growth continues, it
will leapfrog Vinci in next year’s rankings and put four Chinese
companies in the top four places in the league table.
Further down the rankings, there is other evidence of the
strength of China’s large construction groups, with significant
gains for Sinohydro (15), Shanghai Construction Group (21)
China Railway Erju (28) and China Gezhouba (41). As our
analysis on p.18 shows, this has seen Chinese construction
companies claim an unprecedented slice of the Top 200’s
revenues.
But it has not just been the Chinese that have seen gains over
the last 12 months. Another clear trend has been the resurgence
of US construction companies, particularly the residential
construction fraternity. A number of companies like Hovnanian
Enterprises (181) and Meritage Homes (182) have re-entered
the Top 200 towards the foot of the table after a few years’
absence, while other larger house builders such as D R Horton
(60), Lennar (64) and Pulte (66) have made significant strides in
the middle of the rankings.
