The
second
International
Construction Economic Forum
(ICEF) is being deferred to
autumn 2015 and will be held in
Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
The event was originally planned
to take place in London on 30-31
October this year. Organiser KHL
Group said the additional time
would provide an opportunity to
prepare a world-class networking
and business conference building
on the success of the first ICEF,
which was held in November 2013.
“The original idea for ICEF
remains unchanged - to create a
global event for a discussion on
important worldwide trends in
construction, targeted at large
contractors and the wider supply
chain in the industry,” said Murray
Pollok, events director at KHL.
ICEF 2015 will also feature
a series of awards honouring
outstanding achievements in the
industry. Entries for the prestigious
International Construction Project
of the Year award will be accepted
for schemes completed between
July 1, 2013 – the day after the
closing date for the 2013 ICEF
awards – and June 30, 2015. These
dates will also apply for entries to
the other ICEF award categories
relating to construciton equipment.

Allegations
of
corruption
surrounding the construction of
the Moses flood barrier in Venice,
Italy, have led to the arrest of the
Mayor of Venice and a reported 34
other officials and contractors.
It has been alleged that tens of
millions of Euros were handed
over as bribes during the public
tendering stage of the project.
The Mayor, Giorgio Orsoni,
has been placed under house
arrest. He is a former president of
Save Engineering – the Venice-
based engineering consultancy
responsible for upgrading and
developing Marco Polo Airport in
the city.
The € 5 billion (US$ 6.8 billion)
flood barrier project involves rows
of nearly 80 gates that could be
raised and lowered to isolate the
Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic
Sea at high tides.
It takes its name from the
acronym for Modulo Sperimentale
Elettromeccanico (Experimental
Electromechanical Module).
Following Mr Orsoni’s arrest,
Deputy Mayor Sandro Simionato
has replaced him temporarily.
Mr Simionato allied himself with
the Mayor and said he hoped the
judiciary could resolve the situation
as soon as possible.
He said with four years of work
on the project already undertaken
and another year to go, there would
be a continued commitment to
Moses.
