VIDEOZONE
Top 200 video
Go to the
Videoz
one for analysis and
commentary on this year’
s ranking of the world’
s
200 largest construction companies.
A
new video has been added to the
Videozone
to complement the annual ranking of the world’s 200 largest
construction companies (p. 14 of this issue). In this video,
iC
editor
Chris Sleight discusses the most significant aspects of this year’s league table
and what they mean for the industry.
Chinese contractors strengthened their dominance at the top of the Top
200 in this year’s ranking with five companies in the top ten, including
the first, second and third-placed contractors. However, there was also
good growth for many US and UK construction companies on the back of
resurgent domestic markets.
By the same token, there were slides down the table for many Brazilian,
Indian, Japanese and Spanish companies in what appears to be a response to
weak conditions at home.
Overall the sector’s health improved last year, with revenues for the Top
200 growing +6.2% to US$ 1,625 billion. Profitability was better, with the
average operating margin of Top 200 companies rising to 4.65%, compared
to 4.35% in last year’s edition, and employment in the industry was up
+2.9%, with the average Top 200 company having a headcount of 24,583
