All change at the IDE
T
he IDE’s annualAGM sawDuncan
Rudall take over themantle from
outgoingpresident Steve Jack.Other
officer positionswere announcedduring
the event, withDavidDarsey elected as vice
president, StuartAccleton elected to thepost
of honorary treasurer.GaryBishop, Terry
Quarmby,MichaelUlyatt,VernonWatson and
JohnWoodwardwere also elected to the IDE
management council at theAGM.
This body is alsonow tobenowmadeup
of 11members, down from theprevious 14.
Anothermajor itemof notepassedby the
AGMwas the introductionof aTechnician
gradeofmembershipof the Institute– the aim
of this is to attract demolitionprofessionals
who areperhaps unwilling togo through the
formal examinationprocess required togain
higher levels ofmembership.
Both latter changes to the Institutes’ rules
hadpreviously gained the approval of the
management council, butwereput to the
members for approval, whichwas given in
both cases.
NEWMEMBERSHIP ROUTE
TerryQuarmby told the attendees that the
newTechnicianGrade: “sits inbetween an
entrantmember and an associatemember. To
be accepted at thenewgrade, oneneeds tobe
in full time employment in the industry for
aminimumof five years, be theholder of a
GoldCard (supervisor status) or aManager’s
Card andhave theirCPD status fullyup
todate. If acceptedby themembership
committee, thatmemberwill have full voting
rights in Institutebusiness, be able to apply
the initial TechIDE after his or her name,
andwill henceforthhave the official title of
demolition technician.”
Hewent on: “A technician is not a full
member and cannot attain that rankuntil he
or she takes andpasses the Institute’s entrance
examination. The roleof thenewgrade is to
recognise that the roleof an individual has
a level of responsibility commensuratewith
aperson in a junior ormiddlemanagement
position. They cannot claim the titleof a
demolition engineer, which in itself recognises
an individual in a seniormanagement
position.”
Applicants for this gradeofmembership
should, in the first instance, download the
application form from the IDEweb site
or apply through thenational secretary.
Completed forms shouldbe emailedor
posted to the IDE’s office, togetherwith any
supporting evidence. Candidateswishing to
apply for theTechnicianGrademembership
may seek aproposer from the list of IDE
members to strengthen their applicationor
alternatively contact thenational secretary for
assistance
The IDE’smanagement council is
confident that there is a considerable
number of skilled individuals in the industry
that could easily attain this newgradeof
membership. Terry said: “The Institute
wouldurge all of thosewhomayhave
become somewhat disillusioned in thepast
or have reservations about applying for
membership in the first instance to look
at it again. They should lookupon this as
an excellent opportunity toget onto the
membership ladderwith a view toobtaining
fullmembership at a later stage.”
Following theAGM, theLuncheon
followed after a tour of theTower of London,
including theWhiteTower andCrown Jewels,
for those interested. A full houseof 200
members andguestswere in attendance for
this afternoon element of theproceedings.
With the arrival of a
new president and the
