Resurgence
E
ach September/October I compile aerial work platform data from North
America’s rental companies and then rank them by total number of
access units. We’ve been doing the AERIALS
20
for years now (started
in 2008) and it’s been quite the ride.
In 2009, we watched the market tank. With it went thousands of aerials
as rental companies de-fleeted to stay afloat. Since our dark days, though,
companies have refleeted – but there’s better news to report. This year’s
A
20
(page 20) shows true signs of market growth. Equipment levels have
surpassed 2008’s numbers and 2014 through 2017 look to be years of
continued momentum.
Rental giant United Rentals sits atop the A
20
with more than 107,000
pieces of access equipment. Since United’s acquisition of RSC, the company
has dwarfed all remaining A
20
contenders, however, it only makes up for 15
percent of the entire North American rental market. It’s hard to fathom how
many mid-sized and independent rental companies make up the rest of the
market share – and those are the folks I consistently try to pin down to flush
out the A
20
. If you’d like to be listed, please give me a shout.
Other than the A
20
, our September/October issue is packed with features.
ICUEE is right around the corner – Oct. 1-3 in Louisville – and we have the
Show Guide on page 24. There will be a handful of new products at the utility-
focused trade show, including units from Bronto Skylift and Elliott Equipment
Co. In between viewing the products outside and inside, make sure to stop by
KHL’s booth to pick up the latest issues of our magazines and meet the team.
We are located at booth 4735.
I also had the opportunity this issue to interview Jim Maddux, OSHA’s
Directorate of Construction, about OSHA’s fall prevention campaign. As
falls continue to be the leading cause of death in construction, Maddux is
passionate about saving lives. ““There are so many workers that are being
killed on the job,” he says. “Through this program, there are so many solutions
that are out there to solve the problem. I really feel strongly that this is a great
campaign that goes at the largest safety problem in the construction area and
it really has impact to save lives.”
Maddux is speaking at IPAF’s U.S. Convention Oct. 21-22 in Chicago.
See our interview with him on page 13 and also learn more about IPAF’s
Convention on page 17.
With that, we hope your summer wrapped up nicely and that you’re
wrapping up for fall. As always, late August and early September mark the
beginning of college football, so, I have to give a shout out to the best team in
the U.S., my Michigan State Spartans. Go Green!
Thanks for reading.
