IRN SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013
Atlas Copco Portable Energy is ambitious
for its pump business, with plans to add
diesel driven pumps to its existing
submersible range either through a joint
venture or an acquisition.
The diesel driven pumps are seen by
the company as essential for the North
American market. “In Europe,
it is 80% submersibles and
20% engine driven”, says Abet
Cantuba, product marketing
manager pumps at Atlas
Copco Portable Energy, “It’s just
the opposite in North America. So
we are putting our focus on developing a
range of diesel driven pumps.”
He says Atlas Copco is already a global player in
the other portable energy products – including
compressors and generators. “The best way to
Sykes Pumps in the UK continues to expand its submersible pump rental fleet. Stewart Owen, marketing
manager at Andrew Sykes, says the company has made “considerable investments” into its submersibles
fleet with a corresponding increase in business; “We are now better equipped for anticipating and responding
to customers’ needs for all their pumping requirements.” Sykes says its new
submersibles are being well received, with “superior
rag handling performance [and providing
customers with]…an opportunity
to trial a cost effective and
efficient alternative to other pump
manufacturers.” Sykes says its
rental offering extends to control,
instrumentation and telemetry
monitoring equipment for
pumps.
Atlas Copco seeks diesel driven pumps
do it is to complement organic product
development by looking at acquisitions and
collaborations. It could be both.” Mr Abet
says that if things go to schedule then the
company could have diesel pumps within 12
months, possibly sooner.
The focus initially will be automatic
self-priming models in the low to medium
pressure range, with 4, 6 and 8 in units, with
larger high head units also required for
quarry and sewer bypass markets. “If we
can find a company that has everything,
that will be ideal. If not, we will do it in steps.”
Mr Cantuba says getting access to distribution
networks will be an added benefit of an acquisition.
The company also continues to expand its range of
submersible pumps, the WEDA range.
The latest addition is a 0.4 kW sludge/trash pump
to complete its small range, with other 2 and 3 kW as
well as 5 kW, 10 kW and 15 kW pumps to follow over
the next few years.
However, it is the addition of diesel pumps that will
transform the business; “We are ambitious for the
pumps business, dedicating lots of resources to it”,
says Mr Cantuba, “Within three to five years we want
to be a major player in on-site dewatering.”

Tsurumi’s rugged design means many of its pumps can still be found working after 20 years in the field. That’s world class quality.
