Getting to grips with
confined spaces
Short tail swing excavator is said to
be more fuel efficient
J
apanese manufacturer
Komatsu Europe
International has released
its latest short-tail hydraulic
excavator designed to work in
confined areas.
According to the company, the
PC228USLC-10 offers a number
of enhancements including
improved operator control and
comfort, increased lift capacity
and stability.
The company said that its
compact design was also more
fuel efficient than previous
models.
With an operating weight of
between 23,800kg and 24,500kg,
it features a 123kW Komatsu
SAA6D107E-2 engine that is
EU Stage IIIB/EPA Tier 4 Interim
emissions certified.
The vehicle has been created
specifically to tackle compact
environments such as roads,
bridges, and other urban
applications.
Its rounded cab design, which
is ROPS certified and has a
sliding door for ease of access,
allows the cab to rotate within
the same swing radius as the
counterweight.
Equipped with an air
suspension high back seat for
increased operator support,
the pressurised cabin has
a high capacity automatic
heater and defroster. It also
has an air-conditioning system
incorporated into its main
monitor panel.
Performance data can be
monitored with the company’s
use of its Komtrax telematics
computer system. This sends
machine operating information
to a secure website using
wireless technology.
Information such as operating
hours, fuel consumption,
location, cautions and
maintenance alerts are relayed to
the web application for analysis.
Its monitoring systems can also
be employed to reduce the risk
of potential machine theft.
The company said that its
enhanced engine provided a
6.7% increase in horsepower
while lowering fuel consumption.
This is achieved through using
an advanced electronic control
system to manage airflow rate,
fuel injection, combustion
parameters, and after treatment
functions.
It also features a hydraulically
variable geometry turbocharger
(KVGT) and exhaust gas
recirculation (EGR) valve which
the company said provided
improved precision and air
management as well as longer
component life.
Overall improvements to
its hydraulic systems have,
according to the company,
resulted in fuel efficiency savings
of around 4% over the previous
model.

Equipment expansion in Estonia
Chicago Pneumatic has expanded its footprint in Estonia after appointing two new authorised
distributors.
Melker Baltik will be handling handheld compaction equipment and hydraulic tools, while Alas Kuul
will deal with sales of portable compressors and handheld pneumatic equipment.
Ralf Majchrzak, business development manager for Chicago Pneumatic in Scandinavia and the Baltics,
said that the link-up would help provide stronger coverage for the firm in Eastern Europe.
He said, “Both Alas Kuul and Melker Baltik have a real depth of experience and knowledge of working
with construction companies in Estonia, which we fully expect will boost awareness and sales of our
durable and reliable construction equipment solutions in the country.”
With more than 20 years’ industry experience, Alas Kuul is a leading distributor of industrial air
compressors in Estonia.
The company now has access to Chicago Pneumatic’s full European
range of portable equipment including paving breakers, hammers,
rivet busters, scrabblers and rock drills. In addition to sales, the
firm operates a large maintenance and service team, and is able to
provide dedicated after-sales support to its customers.
Margus Veeorg, compressed air sales manager at Alas Kuul, said,
“With demand for portable air on the rise, we jumped at the chance
to partner with Chicago Pneumatic due to its established reputation
in mainland Europe as a supplier of high quality, robust and efficient
portable compressors and air tools.”
Aleksander Nõomaa, managing director of Melker Baltik, felt
there would be a number of benefits from the deal with Chicago
Penumatic through being able to offer an expanded range of
products.
