Meanwhile, Turkey’s demolition market is
also developing fast, and also appears to
be opening up to international expertise,
thanks to new government regulations. It
was recently announced that demolition
contractors from outside Turkey would be
eligible to submit tenders provided they
were part of a joint venture with a Turkish
contractor, for instance.
A €303 billion demolition drive is being
undertaken to demolish and replace up to
6.5 million buildings across the country over
the next 20 years. This follows the major
damage the country sustained in two recent
earthquakes, and buildings that are now
considered unsafe are being systematically
torn down and replaced with earthquake-
resistant designs.
And the government is also increasingly
focused on health and safety on site as the
country's construction market continues to
mature. A new occupational health and safety
law was introduced in 2012, and comes into
force fully in May next year, for example.
This law imposes new responsibilities
and higher penalties on employers in the
construction industry.
Indeed, one of the important changes that
the new law brings is the requirement of an
occupational safety specialist and a workplace
doctor to be present on site, according
to Olcay Sildiroglu-Abraham, a solicitor at
Pinsent Masons.
