certification and PASMA membership in 2013.

In 2013 Mills invited its entire sales team and
some 180 other employees to its own three-
day convention to enhance productivity. It
also launched the Flying High sales campaign
and started the Mills Service Cup in which
individual depots compete with each other
to speed up maintenance, response times to
customers and improve cost management.
In addition the company set up a leadership
development programme.
NATIONWIDE PLATFORMS, UK
Last year saw a comprehensive investment
programme with 1650 units added to the fleet.
The company also establishment a regional
customer service centre, as well as investing
in campaigns designed to tackle key safety
challenges. It also developed its employee
engagement initiatives around key safety issues
and made safety messages more engaging and
accessible. In March 2013, Nationwide also
realigned its hire desk locations.

The updated SmartZone prevents
unauthorised use of mobile elevating work
platforms provides prompts for familiarisation
training and pre-use checks, enables checks to
be made on an operator’s history of MEWP
use; provides service reports and a track and
trace facility, along with a geo-fence facility
within a vandal and weatherproof control
unit. With this update, the size of the unit has
been reduced, among a range of other features.
The company is also producing a SmartZone
video to promote its benefits and familiarise
operators.

he winners of the IAPAs will be
announced at the awards ceremony
taking place 3 April 2014, on the
same day as the IPAF Summit, at the historic
Beaumont Estate Hotel in Windsor, near
London.
There has been an outstanding response
to the IAPAs this year, with more than 100
entries across 12 award categories. Included in
those was a great number of very strong entries;
so if you didn’t make it on to the shortlist this
time, please don’t be put off entering again for
the awards in 2015.

The shortlist was decided at the judges’
meeting in London, UK, on 4 February. We
would also like to thank their efforts in helping
to make the IAPAs 2014 a fantastic event.
The independent and impartial judging panel
included: Andries Schouten, managing director
of HDW Nederland and Gunco; Craig
Paylor, former president of JLG and current
president/owner of US-based National Truck
Body (NTB) Solutions; George Landsberg,
managing director and owner of South African
access equipment distribution company Goscor
Hi-Reach; Gerhard Hillebrand, IPAF’s
representative in Italy since 2004; and Steve
Couling, managing director of TIME-Versalift,
UK & Ireland and IPAF president.
The Photograph of the Year award,
sponsored by Facelift, and the Lifetime
Achievement Award will be announced on the
night.
ACCESS RENTAL COMPANY OF
THE YEAR
AFI, UK
The company has increased the size of its
business by over 50% following a UK £85m,
leading to the simultaneous acquisitions of
Hi-Reach in the UK and Access Rental Gulf
in the Middle East. Despite significantly
increasing staff numbers it also achieved a
further reduction in accidents.The company
has added new features to its telematics
system in its delivery vehicles and launched an
updated version of its SmartZone system.
