IN BRIEF
Mills to invest
heavily in access
Mills Estruturas e Serviços de
Engenharia S.A. (Mills) will
spend 73% of its rental capex
budget for 2014 on aerial
platforms and telehandlers,
amounting to R$169 million.
In its recent capital expenditure
figures, the heavy construction
segment of the Brazilian rental
company is set to receive R$37
million, while the real estate
segment will get R$25 millon -
bringing a total expenditure of
R$231 million across the three
business areas.
This is in sharp contrast to
last year’s projected capex figures
released in January 2013.Then,
access equipment and telehandlers
were set to receive R$59.6 million
during 2013, while real estate
would take R$53.8 million and
construction R$ 26million.
“The company will evaluate
whether to increase these
investments as 2014 progresses,
in accordance with market
opportunities, mainly those related
to auctions in the infrastructure
sector. We have significant
flexibility as regards increasing
our inventory of equipment, as
the time between investment
decision-making and receiving
equipment is around 90 days,”
explained a company spokesman.
Rental giant Riwal has been

As a distributor, Riwal

companies as well as end
users engaged in retail, hotels
and governmental institutions.

Genie innovates at
ARA in Orlando
Genie announced a range
of initiatives at February’s ARA
Rental Show in Orlando, USA in
the areas of secondary guarding,
telematics and cross selling.
It announced a secondary
guarding licensing agreement
with rental group Lavendon.
Based on Lavendon’s SkySiren
technology, the Genie Operator
Protective Alarm (OPA) system
can be retrofitted to any Genie
articulating or telescopic boom lift
manufactured after 2002.
Genie is also introducing what
it describes as the industry’s first
telematics-ready connector to
enable telematics devices to be
plugged into Genie boom lifts.
The connector is now available on
the Genie S-80 and Z-80 boom
lifts, and will be available on the
S-100, S-120 and ZX-135 models
by the end of the first quarter
2014. Genie will also introduce
the connector on machines with
boom heights below 80 ft over the
next year.
In addition, the company
announced the North American
Direct 2 Rental (D2R) cross-
selling initiative that will sell,
service and provide parts and
warranty support for select Terex
Construction and Terex Crane
products, to allow rental customers
easier access to products and
reduce cost of ownership.
Skyjack has announced the winner
of its Quest2013 to find the oldest
working machine produced in the
manufacturer’s 30 year history.
The year-long search took in
most regions of the world,
including South America and Asia.
Finally the oldest surviving
machine, a SJ006-10, was tracked
down in Skyjack’s home country of
Canada. Kraner Electrical, a Guelph,
Ontario-based company, which
provides electrical maintenance
and installation for heavy industries,
purchased the used SJ006-10 at
Bolton Auction House in May 1996.
But the machine, with a serial
number of 00E, dates back to 1985.
Skyjack awarded Kramer with its
prize of a new 19 ft working height
SJIII 3219 scissor at this year’s
Rental Show in Orlando.
United Rentals is forecasting revenue growth of between 12.5% and 17% this
year on the basis that the bulk of the recovery in non-residential construction
has still to come and that the rental sector is at the early stages of a multi-year
growth cycle.
The company – the world’s largest equipment rental firm – posted a 6.2%
increase in revenues for 2013 to US$4.66 billion (compared to combined
revenues for United and RSC in 2012). Net profits for the year were $387 million,
up from $75 million in 2012.
Fourth quarter revenues rose 7.1% to $1.34 billion, with net profits of $140
million, up from $41 million in 2012.
The revenue increases result from a 6.9% rise in the volume of equipment on
rent and a 4.2% average increase on rental rates. United invested $1.58 billion
gross on its fleet in 2013 and said it will increase that to $1.65 billion this year.
