Issue 2
March-April 2014
M
uch of the big news in this issue comes from ConExpo. Nearly
all the exhibitors at the show in Las Vegas in early March were
talking about a resurgence in the North American market.
There were also a number of interesting new products on display there,
including JLG’s well-documented superboom, the 185 ft 1850SJ, which
peaks Terex AWP’s Genie SX-180, launched last year at Bauma, by five
feet in height.
The launch of JLG’s machine has spurred a lively debate as to which
manufacturers might, or might not, follow suit with a boom to rival JLG
and Genie. In the Superbooms feature, starting on page 23, some of those
boom producers talk candidly about their plans in the big boom sector.
While mighty machines like the 1850SJ are a big talking point, there
were plenty of other products at the Las Vegas exhibition to catch the
attention. Beyond the traditional products in North America, truck
mount manufacturers from Europe and track mounted producers from
the same continent are all trying their luck in North America, with
the view that it is starting to embrace these types of products. See the
ConExpo review, starting on page 26.
Another industry talking point is the International Awards for
Powered Access (IAPA).The hotly contested categories saw a huge
number of entries this year which will make for a greatly entertaining
evening on the 3 April in Windsor at the Beaumont Estate hotel, near
London. Take a look at the shortlist, with a summary of each entry, on
page 15.The IAPAs take place on the same day as the IPAF Summit – I
hope to see you there.
Also just around the corner is APEX, taking place 24-26 June, in
Amsterdam. There is a preview on page 20, and, as you will see, this
year’s instalment promises to be the biggest ever, with more than 100
exhibitors, all directly connected to the access industry. Although it’s an
international show, APEX will also be a good indicator for the industry
in Europe, which, as we all know, is behind North America overall in
its general recovery. Having said that, there are some growth spots, and
companies are starting to talk about better times ahead. IPAF provides an
interesting overview of this market, and North America, in its summary
of its Rental Market Reports on page 44.
Other than that, there’s lots more to be discovered in this issue of
AI
,
so I invite you to take a look over the page at the Contents.
