New year, new
challenges
G
rowingup inTexas, you learnpretty early in life that
thebarrel priceofWestTexas Intermediate crude
oil can impact your family’s livelihood. When Iwas
a youngster, yougot anewbicyclewhenoil priceswerehigh,
and consequently, yougot ahand-me-downbike from a cousin
whendrilling activity slowedor per barrel priceswere low.We
all knew aboutmineral rights, 3-D seismic technology, and the
like, becausemost of our familieswere intrinsically tied to the
oil business. Sowhenoil prices started their recent freefall, folks
in theGulf States region started to retreat, preparing for the
slowdowns andperhaps even layoffs that inevitablyhavebeen a
part of this cycle.
But things are a littledifferent thesedays, especially since
America’sdependenceon foreignoil hasdecreasedand the
economiesof theGulf Stateshavebeendiversified. Plus, the
upside is that loweroil prices couldalsobringa lot of good
things to the table, includinga reduction in the cost of doing
business, lowerhomeheating costs and lowerprices to fill up
our automobiles. RonDeFeo,CEOofTerexCorp., put itwell,
“I’mhopeful that the current priceof oilwill act as a tax cut
anda stimulus for the economy,”he said. “Even though I’m in
manufacturing, weneed to remember thatmore than two-thirds
of the economy is service and consumerbasedandwithmore
money in thepocketsof consumers, evidenceusually suggests
that spendingwill increase.”
My interviewwithDeFeo, onpage25, coveredmany topicsof
interest to the construction equipment sector as awhole and the
crane industry specifically.
Inour annual IndustryFocus: Safety, TrainingandCertification,
JohnSkelly takes a lookat theprevalent safetyand training issues
the industry faces in this year inhis articleonpage28.
Andwhat about that coverphoto? Isn’t that amazing? Our Site
Report: Lifting, onpage41, details theworkperformedbya
PotainMR415 tower crane, whichhelped construct the tallest
residential skyscraper in theworld. Also, our SiteReport: Lifting
&Transport onpage37provides anoverviewof howaTalbert

sinkhole inBowlingGreen,KY.
Aswe start theNewYear, everyone is talkingabout business
prospects for 2015.Most peoplewe talk to think things aregoing
tobeprettymuch statusquo,with2015beinga tadbetter than
2014.Wewant tohear fromyou–howare things inyourneckof
thewoods?
And finally,HappyNewYear!
