IgoT-130,with a170-foot
reach, 124-foot height, and
a very small footprintmakes
contractors take a second look
at savingmoney andgetting
their projects inon time,” said
George Schrade, founder of
A-QuickPickCrane.
Shawmut Equipmentwas
pleased to seeA-QuickPick’s
early enthusiasm for self-
erectors.
“A-QuickPickquickly
saw the valueof Potain self-
erecting cranes andhas been
able to convince someof
themost highly regarded
contractors inNewEngland
to try these cranes on
several highprofileprojects,”
Shawmut EquipmentVice
PresidentKevinO’Connell
said. “We greatly appreciate
A-QuickPick’swillingness
to embracewhat is still a
relativelynew lifting concept
inNorthAmerica.”
Gaining traction
Potain self-erecting cranes
havebeenwidelyused in
Europe for decades and are
steadilygainingpopularity
inNorthAmerica. The
key advantages of self-
erecting cranes include a
small footprintwith a long
reach, lowermobilization
anddemobilization costs
compared to top slewing tower
cranes, and standard radio
remote controls that allow
theoperator tomovewith the
load throughout the lifting
zone.Additionally, the ability
for the tower cranes tobe
fully electric allows for crane
operationswithno emissions
andgreatly reducednoise in
urban and residential areas.

A-QuickPick andShawmut
Equipment have seen themost
successwith twoof the largest
models – thePotainHDT80
and thePotain IgoT-130.

Thehighprofileproject
included completely
renovating and remodeling an
existing structureused for the
displayof fine art, alongwith
the additionof observation
decks on the top floors. Space
limitations on the jobsite
caused concern, but thePotain
HDT80s eliminated theneed
for the subcontractor to shut
downbusy city streets and
tomobilizedifferent cranes
multiple times throughout the
project.
Most recently,A-QuickPick
Crane Service andShawmut
Equipment assembled aPotain
IgoT130 at an apartment
buildingproject inNorwalk,
CT. This buildingwill be five
stories of apartments, aswell
as a two story subterranean
parkinggarage,withmultiple
types of crewsworking
simultaneously to complete
theproject quickly and
efficiently.
Withbusyhighways and
streets surrounding the job
site, in addition to restrictions
due to theproximityof a
MetroNorth railroad line,
thePotain IgoT130 is able
to reachout and carry
loads to areas of the job site
inaccessible to fork trucks and
other lifting equipment.
According toA-QuickPick
CraneProjectManager Frank
Grich, “Itwas obvious from
theoutset that the tower crane
was the ideal solution at this
job site.”
With the site’s space
limitations, the tower crane
can safely andquicklymove
plumbing equipment, glass,
ductwork,HVAC supplies, as
well aswaste anddebris. The
versatilityof this cranemakes
schedulingdeliveries on the
job site andmoving all of the
building supplies todifferent
crewsmore efficient.
