Looking up
A
n interesting email camedown thepike thismonth
fromRiderLevettBucknall, aPhoenix-based
construction industry consulting company. The firm
announced the launchof its “NorthAmericanRLBCrane Index.”
The reportmeasures constructionactivity inmajor cities across
NorthAmericaandwill predict thehealthof theU.S. construction
industry.Andhowwill they research this report?By lookingup.
Unlikeother industrybarometers, RLB’sCrane Index tracks
thenumberof fixed craneson construction sites inBoston,
Chicago,Denver,Honolulu, LosAngeles,NewYork, Phoenix, San
FranciscoandSeattle.Additional cities, includingWashington,
D.C.,will be added, the company said.
According to the company’s first report, the residentialmarket,
specifically condominiumandapartment developments, are
thehottest segmentsof construction.Commercial, healthcare,
hospitalityand education sectorshave also started to see increases
in crane activity, the report said.
“Unlikeother formsof data, cranes areobservable and
recognizable iconsofmajor constructionactivity. Therefore,
theyare an extremelyusefulmeasureof the changingpaceof the
construction industry,” said JulianAnderson, president, Rider
LevettBucknall,NorthAmerica.Wewill keepan eyeon thisnew
report andkeepyouapprised.
In this issue, JohnSkellydelves into the evolutionof the all
terrain crane in theNorthAmericanmarketwithhis article
Product Focus:AllTerrainCranesonpage33.
TheFebruary issue also features an interestingand important
articleon telematics,whichwas adapted froma speechgivenby
Link-Belt’sBill Stramer at theWorldCrane&Transport Summit
inOctober 2014 inMiami. Stramer takes a thoughtful lookat this
technologyanddiscusseshow craneowners canuse thisdata to
their advantage.
TheNewYearbrought ahost of industrymanagement changes,
including thenews that LarryWeyershas replacedEricEtchart as
president ofManitowocCranes. There aremanagement changes
andnew faces at LiebherrCranes, Link-Belt, TadanoAmerica,
AlpsWireRope and several other companies.Don’tmiss all these
articles inourNews andPeople&Events columns.
We are looking forward toheadingout toAtlanta to theSC&RA
SpecializedTransportationSymposium in earlyMarch, andwe’re
all registered for theSC&RAAnnualConference inCarlsbad,
CA inApril.Don’tmissMikeChalmer’spreviewof theAnnual
Conference in theSC&RANews articleonpage49.
And finally, keepus informedonwhat’s goingonwithyour
