Market outlook
According to Bates, the market has picked
up in the last two years. “To get our
economy back into a healthy situation, we
do need to get residential starts back above
non-residential growth numbers,” he said.
“Government-funded projects dropped
off in 2012 as commercial projects saw a
notable increase. There’s a lot of money
sitting on the sidelines waiting to start
projects.”
Bates said across the board utilization is
trending up.
For Essex Crane Rental, our fourth-
placed company on the
TC
50
, utilization
of larger tower cranes and elevator lifts
increased to 56 percent for the fourth
quarter of 2012 from 54.7 percent and
37.3 percent for the third quarter of
2012 and the fourth quarter of 2011,
respectively.
“Utilization across many of our
remaining asset categories increased on
both a quarter over quarter basis and
on a sequential quarter basis,” said Ron
Schad, Essex president and CEO. “The
improvement on a sequential quarter
basis is particularly encouraging as our
fourth quarter has historically been a soft
seasonal period. While our results are
encouraging, I believe that we are still
in the very early stages of what will be a
gradual recovery for rental rates.”
While rental rates and utilization slowly
climb upward, it definitely is a mixed
bag for the market as our
TC
50
reflects
slightly smaller fleets, but an industry
poised for growth.
