JANUARY2015
A
swemove into theNewYear, attention
turns to what the next 12 months
might hold for the industry.
IC
’s series
of forecasts and surveys through the year
helps by providing valuable insight intowhat
has been happening and, by using this and
other input, a forecast can be made of the
likelydirection that thingswill take.
Thismonth our annual Crane Confidence
Survey, on page 34, is not exactly upbeat but,
perhaps, is stronger than last year in that it shows a clearer and
more definite direction from an equipment end user perspective.
Thankfully, overall, that direction is upwards, albeit only slightly.
With the recent plummet in the price of oil, despite it helping to
boost the economy in many respects, a negative impact could
follow on for our industry as so much of its business depends
on servicing the industry surrounding its location, extraction,
processing and soon.
The Crane Confidence Survey shows that end users are busy
andutilisation is highbut rental rates are low andhavenot risen in
line. Financing remains difficult and there is still a fair amount of
relatively new equipment around so this activity is yet to translate
into sales formanufacturers of new equipment, as reflected in their
last quarter revenue declines. The auctions feature on page 31 and
the finance storyonpage 39 also interesting in this regard.
As reported in the
IC
50 ranking of the world’s largest crane-
owning companies in the June issue of
IC,
therewas a healthy 7%
growth in the capabilityof the top respondents’ fleets. In2013 total
sales of new cranes continued to rise and, for example, wheeled
mobile crane saleswereupby3%.
Ourmost recent
IC
m20 ranking of the world’s 20 largest crane
manufacturers by crane-related sales revenue showed stability and
little change overall.Within that, however, were some extreme ups
and downs. It ranged from a rise of almost 35% on one hand to a
declineofmore than20%on another.
At the end of August 2014, however, another of our measures,
themonthly
IC
Share Index showed that the cranemanufacturing
sector was worth 23%more than it was a year earlier, in terms of
share prices. Let’s hope that this and the other positive indicators
continue in the right direction and translate into better business
performance all round in2015.
