SITE REPORT
waste streams.Non-ferrousmaterials
are transported to a specialist recycler in
Birmingham, with ferrous scrap similarly
transported toSouthampton. John said: “The
copper, all non-ferrousmetals currently go to
Birminghambut it all dependswho is paying
thehighest price for the scrap”.
In terms of concrete, the initial cooling
tower implosions generated an estimated
30,000 tonnes and this has all been crushedon
site and is now awaiting reuse. John said: “It is
all nowType I – clean– and itwill beused to
make the site goodduring the redevelopment
work”. It is currentlyunderstood that the site
will beused for industrial units, although at
one time therewere reports that itmight end
up as a freight facilitybecauseof its adjacent
rail links.
“Every element of the contract is
challenging”, said John, “butwith the team
inhere, sittingdown, planning it, goingout
there, looking at it again– four people looking
at is better thanone– it almost routine. I have
been involvedwith a lot of power stations but
every time youwalk into it, you see something
different. You canget to thepointwhere
you are looking andnot seeing the challenge
but if youhave someone elsewith you the

greater is the chance youhaveof finding the
right solution. Theproblem is that it is all
big stuff – the turbinehall contained four
turbineswith the generator at the end alone
weighed750 tonnes andwe got that down
from its support structureusing a cut andpull
techniquewherewe cut the legs of the steel
structure supporting it at thebottom. It’s not
hardbut it’s big and it’'s awkward. If youmake
amistake, you can imagine the consequences.
Youhave to take your time and it has tobe
planned right.”
In terms of accidents or incidents, the
recordon sitehas been excellent. John said:
“TheColemanpolicy is that yougohome
from thework in the same condition that you
arrived thatmorning. Considering the scale
of the job, thenumber of incidents havebeen
minimal.”
