INTERVIEW
have tobewellmanaged aswedonotwant to
dilutewhatwehave as abasis towork from.”
An IDEpresident’s termof officeof just
twoyears isnot a long time to establish such
an initiative, so support from the rest of the
association, its committees andmembers,
would seem essential if this initiative is tobe
successful. “The committees arebuying into
it,” saidDuncan. “It has been a long time in
theplanning– therehas always been a grey
area as towherewewerewith certaingrades,
with recognition and access levels set quite
high and therewas a recognitionof this gap.
Sincewe aremoving towards becoming a
bigger part of the construction industry in
terms of possibleChartered status andbeing
members of theEngineeringCouncil, thenwe
have tohavedifferent layers ofmembership to
maintain that.”
Occupying thepositionof president is
obviously adouble-edged sword, in that
considerable time and effort is required to
fulfil the role effectively. This in turnwill
tohave thepotential for an impact on the
office-bearer’s ‘day job’.Duncan saidof this:
“It alreadyhas – I havebeenon theCouncil
fornearly eight years and Iwas prepared for
the impact thatwouldhave.As vicepresident,
I lost 22days a year and as president I expect
to easily commit around amonth to the role,
and Iwould say I havehad to adjust theway
I live to accommodate that. It is going tobe
aheavy impact during the twoyears. I feel
verypassionately about the industry and am
prepared to accept this as a result. It is oneof
those industrieswhereonce you start doing it,
you cannot get away from it. Iwould sayyou
come intodemolition to enjoy it andnot for
financial gain. It is definitelyworth the two
year commitment!”
Duncanwill be succeeded in turnbynew
current vicepresidentDavidDarcey, who
is apast president of theUK’sNFDC,who
will takeover carrying the torchof further
developing the standingof the IDE, but
Duncanwas firm that there twogoals he
would like to see achievedduringhis tenure.
“Iwould like to see the IDE achieveChartered
statureby the endofmy term and add to that a
doubling in thenumber of IDEmembers from
where it currently stands,”he said.
“Thatwould takeus to at least 1,000
membersUK-wide and then alsopotentially
more internationally. Thatwouldput us
in a goodposition. If you look at theother
Charteredprofessional associations, theyhave
thousands ofmembers bothworldwide and
in theUK. The IDE estimates that there are
approaching14,000 individualsworking in the
demolition industry in theUK, so achieving
thatmembership levelwill not happen
overnight but it shouldbepossible.”
