auma was a glowing success in many ways. Apart from the
generally good weather - leading up to the show there had
been forecasts of constant rain - exhibitors were delighted with
the number of visitors to their stands, which, in many cases, led to
substantial orders. Often exhibitions are more about establishing brands
and making contacts, and bauma 2013 was no exception, but time-after-
time I heard stories of people buying machines straight off the booth.
Of all the powered access manufacturers, rental companies and other
interested parties I spoke to during the show, the mood was one of deep
satisfaction, mixed with doses of surprise and relief. There are references
to bauma throughout this issue of
AI
, not least in the bauma review,
starting on page 21, and the self-propelled booms feature, starting on
page 13. In the latter you will find a comprehensive write-up about
the new 180 ft Terex AWP Genie SX-180 boom, which was, perhaps,
the highlight of the exhibition, and appears on the front page of this
magazine. I say perhaps, because the show offered many highlights
across the different segments of the access industry.
In this issue you will also find the
access
20
listing of the world’s
biggest access equipment manufacturers, based on their turnover for
the 2012 financial year. The table reveals a general rise in fortunes
during that period, although the on-going difficulties in Europe had
a universal impact, and exchange rates caused some companies to slip
down the table, despite achieving substantial increases in turnover in
their domestic currency, namely the Japanese Yen. In the top five of the
table, however, there are increases across the board, and it seems we can
take comfort from the fact that these companies are making the most
of potential in the emerging markets and the uptick in North America.
Having said that, first quarter financial results for 2013 are telling a
slightly different story for some of some of the major manufacturers,
and there are one or two worrying signs for the months ahead. (See the
News, starting on page 6).
Apart from the so-called emerging nations, there are other countries
waiting in the wings to be the next big thing. Regions like North Africa
may immediately spring to mind, but for Galmon, Singapore’s biggest
rental company, the surrounding ASEAN region provides the answer
for long term growth. See an interview with the company’s CEO and
founder Desmond Ong, starting on page 10, to find out more.
