Manitowoc’s newMLC650
crawler crane, launched
last year atConExpo2014
andwhich features the
innovative variableposition
counterweight (VPC), has
completed itsmax load
testingwith theVPC-MAX
attachment.
TheVPC-MAX attachment
for theMLC650 raises the
crane’s capacity to770 tons,
an increaseof 55 tons over
its standard configuration.
TheVPC-MAX attachment
includes additional
counterweight and abeam
that automatically extends
the counterweight beyond
the rear of the cranebased
on lifted load, increasing
its loadmoment. For the
max load test, the crane
was positioned to apply the
maximum stresses through
the structure, including the
boompositionedover the
corner of the crawler crane,
Manitowoc said.
DustinSoerens,marketing
manager for lattice-boom
cranes atManitowoc, said
the testingwent according to
plan and that the company’s
engineerswerehappywith the
testing results.
“We attachedhundreds of
straingauges to theMLC650
andpicked anumber of loads
in the test yard to test its
capacitywith theVPC-MAX
attachment,”he said. “The
testingwent verywellwith
no surprises.No changes are
neededon the crane, as it
performed superbly.We’re
well onourway to releasing
this innovative crane to the

fewer components and
assembly steps, reducing setup
time and transportation costs.
Also, job siteswill require

“The successful testingwas
a greatmoment for everyone
