Feeling the
effects?
W
hile loweroil andgasprices are an economic
stimulus for consumers andavarietyof other
industries, theyhave started tohurt some segments
of the crane sector.
JohnSkelly found evidenceof this inhis article about crane sales
byNorthAmericanauction companies. Theoil andgas industry
is flushwith cranes, he reports, especially rough terrain cranes.
RitchieBros. recently sold34 cranes at anauction inCasper,WY,
where it sold the crane fleet of EnergyTransportation, which
was recentlyacquiredbyNCEnergy. Skelly reports thatwhile
infrastructure construction ison the increase, theoil andgas
sectorhas flooded themarketwith cranes.Auction companies are
bracing for softerused craneprices, but they say there is always an
appetite for good, late-model cranes.
Self-propelledmodular transporters, knownas SPMTs, are
very interestingpiecesof rigging equipment. I contend theseodd
looking transporters actually inspire rigging creativitybecause
theyare so flexibleandhave somanyvariables in theirusage
and operation. JohnSkelly takes a lookat themarket for these
machines and innovationsby the leadingmanufacturers.
BruceForster is thenext president of theSC&RA, and the
organization couldnot bemore fortunate forhis leadership.
Forster, hiswifeBonnie and their sonBen,were among the first
people I got toknowwhen I first startedas editor at
ACT,
and
theyhave all been instrumental inmy learning the ropesof this
industry.MikeChalmers interviewedBruce about hisupcoming
year aspresident andall thingsbusiness and family.
And finally, it’s reallynicehavinga cranemanufacturer in
yourbackyard.Well,Manitex isn’t actually inmybackyard, but
the company is locatedabout sevenmilesdown the road from
myoffice.When Ihave aquestionabout somethingorneed to
talkabout something related to cranes, it’s easy to call the folks
atManitex for aquickdemonstration. Suchwas the case in
MarchwhenRandyRobertsonhelpedmewithanarticleon the
proliferationof remote control use in theoperationof cranes.
Iwas able to seehow remote control systems canhelp set up
andoperateboom trucks,whichwas agreat benefit inwriting
the article.Kudos to theManitex folks for alwayshelpingout an
editor inneed.
Also thismonth,we are excited to travel toSouthernCalifornia
to theSC&RAAnnualConference.Wehope to catchupwithour
readers at the conference, andwewill report on everythingwe
findout inourMay issue, including theSC&RA Jobof theYear
Awards.Until then...
