Pretty hot
I
t’s August, and it’s pretty danged hot in Texas and everywhere
else around the country. But the promise of fall is in the air
and football season is about to start.
To that end, Groves Crane Rental certainly knows how to show
its college football spirit. The company donated the use of a
Grove RT880E to Baylor University for the construction of its
new football stadium. Steve McReynolds, owner of Groves, is a
huge fan of his alma mater, and giving the school a crane to use
was his way to help. Painted up in Baylor green and gold, the
crane is a jobsite asset in more ways than one.
This issue features our
ACT
TOWER
CRANE
50
top list. The
growth of the list continues to be slow going, just like the market
for these machines. But the good news is that utilization for these
machines is up. Our
ACT
TOWER
CRANE
50
list is on page 29.
On the subject of tower cranes, Morrow Equipment’s Peter
Jurhen discusses how to inspect and refurbish tower cranes that
have not been used in a while. Tim Hillegonds digs deeper into
crane inspections in our Rigging Review column, as well.
This issue also includes a round-up of jobs using specialized
lifting equipment, including gantries, jacks, skates and the like.
The projects featured include the installation of automotive
presses and transformers, the launching of a huge super yacht
and even moving three draglines. To complement this article,
our Q&A is with Kevin Johnston, president of J&R Engineering.
Plus we have three site reports on hauling a famous sculpture,
launching a U.S. Navy ship and rigging the arches on a new
bridge.
More good news can be found within the energy sector,
specifically in oil and gas. Terry White takes a look at this
industry and how it’s impacting, in a good way, the crane, rigging
and transportation sector. SC&RA’s Joel Dandrea also takes up
this topic in SC&RA Comment.
And finally, being a tried and true journalism type, I have been
slow to embrace reading a newspaper or magazine online. Sure
I have a few favorite online news websites, including our own
khl.com/act webpage. But digital readership continues to grow.
Our circulation department reports that
ACT
’s digital circulation
is growing, especially since our tablet edition was introduced
few months ago. Yes, it’s true. If you have a tablet you can get
a subscription to
American Cranes & Transport
and our sister
magazine
International Cranes and Specialized Transport.
To
subscribe to the tablet edition, simply tap to
the blue App Store icon on your iPad or go
to iTunes on your Android or smartphone.
After that, all you have to do is search for
American Cranes & Transport
and download
the subscription. It’s simple and free. As a
bonus, the tablet edition of
ACT
features
additional job photos and videos.
All that said, what’s up with you,
your people and your equipment?
Drop me a line.
