Amazing
ingenuity
I
t never ceases to amaze me the ingenuity of the people in our
industry. Whether it’s lifting, moving, hauling or installing
some incredibly huge and heavy component or designing a
crane, transport system or rigging gear to perform such a task, the
people in this industry know how to get it done.
Our cover story, which is exclusive to
ACT,
is about the latest
new giant crane from Lampson International. The LTL-3000
has been fully assembled and is now going through the rigorous
testing process to assure all systems are a go.
Another story of ingenuity I heard at the SC&RA Crane &
Rigging Workshop in Orlando. At one of the coffee breaks, I was
chatting with Southwest Industrial’s Harry Baker who described
how he fixed a problem at his Colorado ranch. Apparently there
was an old barn at the ranch that was in pretty good shape, except
for the foundation and around the bottom of the structure. The
wood had rotted, making it unsafe and unstable. Rather than raze
the barn, Baker brought out his gantry jacks, raised the entire
barn structure up enough to build a new foundation and replace
the rotting wood around the lower edge of the barn. Once the
new construction was completed, the barn was lowered back to its
foundation in once piece. Voilà! Problem solved.
Also while in Florida, Pat Sharkey and I were able to travel
to nearby Cocoa to the headquarters of Precision Enterprises.
There we were able to see all the attributes of the new Scheuerle
Kamag K25 Power Booster. This new piece of equipment was
quite impressive, and will give those in the heavy haul and rigging
industry a new and versatile tool.
And then there was ICUEE. You know, I had never been to
ICUEE, and I discovered I’ve been missing out on an important
event. While there, our
ACT
team was able to talk with many
folks who do work in the utility sector. I appreciated being able
to look at new boom trucks from all the manufacturers and see
demonstrations of all types of equipment. I was most fascinated
with how many boom truck companies are mounting boom
trucks on crawler tracks. Essentially they are creating a hybrid
telescopic crawler crane, but on a much smaller scale than those
made by Tadano Mantis, Link-Belt and Liebherr. I asked Ed
Hisrich with Tadano Mantis if he thought these smaller machines
would compete with the more traditional telescopic crawler
business. He didn’t think so, but it’s certainly something to watch.
This month’s issue is jam packed with stuff, including a review
of the tower crane market, a look at crane camera technology
and our Interview column that centers on the work of various
ConExpo planners. Plus we have three Site Reports that
chronicle engaging projects.
And finally, we are working on our Transport 50 top list.
Have you sent me your survey form yet?
