he interviews we conduct for the annual World Rental Report always throw up some
interesting features of the rental market; things that perhaps confound or surprise.
This year, it was Brazilian rental company Estaf telling us that World Cup and Olympic
related projects made up less than 5% of its business – dispelling the impression that these
mega-events are singlehandedly fuelling Brazil’s infrastructure sector.
In India, it was Vivek Soni of Indian rental company Gemini describing how the company
has its own version of fleet telematics, comprising a call centre that makes daily telephone
contact with operators, mechanics and clients to check the whereabouts and workload of its
machines.
And in the UK, where there has been little but economic gloom for the past five years,
we hear of a rental company, One Call Hire, investing heavily and managing to grow in a
construction market that is still facing severe challenges.
If there was a theme to this year’s report, apart from surprises, it is that equipment rental
is tending to grow even in the headwinds of economic uncertainty, perhaps even
helped
by
those headwinds. That is certainly the view of senior rental managers in markets as diverse
as the US and India.
Elsewhere this month we have a Chinese theme. Having visited four Chinese aerial platform
manufacturers over the summer we report on their continued investment in production
capacity and their views on the Chinese rental market. We also talk to Sany – one of the
giants of Chinese construction equipment – about its plans to expand excavator sales
outside of China.
We also alert you to another interesting column from Kevin Appleton, who argues that
viewing your business like a football team, with a defence, midfield and attack, can help you
manage your priorities.
If it is management advice you are after then we recommend that you attend the
International Rental Conference in Beijing on 14 October. A long way to go for many of our
readers, I know, but worth the trip when you can also take in a visit to the massive BICES
show at the same time. See page 29 for details.
Enjoy the issue, surprises included.
