CHINA
Elevator manufacturer
Schindler has been awarded a
contract to equip the 115-storey
tall Ping An Finance Center tower,
which is under construction in
Shenzhen, in China’s Guangdong
province. When complete, the
building will include office and
retail space and stand 660 m high,
making it the tallest building in
China.
Commissioned by the Ping An
Insurance Group, one of the largest
insurance firms in China, the
building will feature 33 Schindler
7000 series double-deck elevators.
The installation of the office elevator
section started in December 2013,
with a completion date of April
2015.
PHILIPPINES
US$ 8 billion
for repairs
Reconstruction costs in the
Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan,
which made landfall on the eastern
and central islands of the Philippines
on 8 November, have been put at
more than US$ 8 billion, by the
Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The ADB said it was ready to
provide over US$ 1 billion in
support for reconstruction. It
approved a US$ 500 million
emergency loan directly after the
storm, and has added an extra US$
400 million to this figure to support
infrastructure reconstruction and
climate resilience initiatives in
communities.
In addition to those loans and
grants, the ADB said up to US$ 150
million from current projects could
be reallocated to rebuilding.
The ADB said it was also
establishing a field office inTacloban
to help implement projects as part
of the government’s reconstruction
plan.
The World Bank has also pledged
US$ 500million, while construction
equipment manufacturers have
donated machines and funds.
One of the most powerful storms
ever recorded on land, Typhoon
Haiyan
flattened
buildings,
uprooted trees and sent a huge
storm surge into coastal areas. Over
5,000 people are confirmed to have
died.
GLOBAL
TI study highlights link with
corruption and poverty
The results of Transparency
International’s (TI’s) global public-
sector corruption perceptions
survey show a link between poverty
and an increased risk of corruption.
The cleanest countries in the 2013
survey were Denmark and New
Zealand, both of which scored more
than 90 out of a possible 100 on the
scale of perceived corruption. Other
high-rankers were Finland, Sweden,
Norway, Singapore, Switzerland,
the Netherlands, Australia, Canada
and Luxembourg, all of which
scored more than 80 out of 100.
At the other end of the scale,
Somalia, North Korea and
Afghanistan all scored less than 10
out of 100, and other low-ranked
countries included Sudan, South
Sudan, Libya, Iraq, Uzbekistan,
Turkmenistan, Syria, Yemen and
Haiti.
TI bases its findings on expert
opinion of corruption in different
countries, drawn from a range of
sources and business surveys.
Construction is one of the
industries at greatest risk from
corruption. According to consultant
Grant Thornton, bribery, fraud and
other illegal activities could cost
the industry as much as US$ 860
billion per year – 10% of its value.
