and inferiorpersonal protective
equipment (PPE).
The company iswarning
businesses tobe extravigilant
whenpurchasingPPE and
says itwelcomesproposed
legislation thatwouldmake
retailers anddistributors
responsible for ensuring
products they sellmeet the
required safety standards.
LeeWright, Slingsby
marketingdirector, said,
“Over the last coupleof years,
it’s beenwell-publicised that
cheap, substandard, and even
counterfeit PPE is finding
itsway into theUK.A lot of
the exampleswehave seen
arebadlymade and fail to
offer any real protection, as
well as beingnon-compliant
with safety standards. Some
products even comewith
falsified certifications.Many
of theseproducts look thepart
and it canbedifficult to spot
fakes. It is therefore important
for companies tobuyPPE
through reputable suppliers
and to ensure it is certified to
the appropriateBritish
orEuropean standards.
New legislation is
currentlybeing
considered to
eradicate counterfeit
61
PPEbymaking retailers and
distributors accountable for
ensuring thequalityof the
products they sell.
“At themoment
manufacturers are solely
responsible for checking
products complywith
performance standards,”
Wright added. “Under the
proposals, companies selling
theseproductswouldhave to
keep records about their stock
and ensureproductsmeet
required standards and this
has tobewelcomenews.
“Until the changes are
introducedbusinesses
andorganisationshave
a responsibility to their
employees, customers and the
public toprovidePPE that is
safe andwill do its job should
theworst happen. Thismakes
buyingPPE abig responsibility
because safety equipment that
doesn’t perform canultimately
cost lives.”
