EVENTSDIARY
This picture of themonthwas sent in by IC reader
ErichUrweider. The photowas taken at the port of
Auhafen inSwitzerland. It shows Swiss heavy haulage
specialist Friderici spécial hauling a 309 tonne
generator to theAlstom factory inBirr, Aargau,
Switzerland. The transport was carried out over two
nights. The generatorwas 70metres long, 4.42m
wide and4.32mhigh. Total weight of the transport
was 500 tonnes. ThreeMercedes-Benz Actros 4160
V8 tractorswere used to haul the cargo.

ConstructionPlant-hireAssociation’s Tower
Crane Interest Group in theUK, died in January
following a short illness. Well known throughout
the industry, Appleyard’s career started in the
1970s as an owner-driver providing transport
and haulage services to a house builder next
door to theStanleyDavies Tower Crane (SDTC) yard in the north of
England. He provided occasional haulage toSDTC and in 1980 began
working full time for them as an erector and tower crane operator.
SDTChad amixed fleet of around 27 cranes andAppleyardworked
onprestigious projects. In 1983 he became erection supervisor on the
now renamedWolff Davies fleet, expanded to 50 cranes. Promoted to
operationsmanager atWolff Davies in 1986, Appleyard played amajor
part in the re-mapping of theUK tower crane rental industry.
InNovember 2001 he joinedSelect Plant HireCo Ltd (Tower Crane
Division) as operationsmanager. Select held a small fleet but it was
soon one of largest in theUK. Appleyard formed a strong operations
department. Hemoved to performancemanagement in the newly
titled LiftingSolutions division.
He brought new and fresh ideas, changed processes, implemented
newprocedures, and actively promoted the communication of best
practice values that would ensure a sustainable future for all. Colin
Wood, chief executive, CPA said, “Sydwas awell-liked andwell
respectedman, and contributed significantly to the development of the
tower crane industry. Hewill be sadlymissed by all who knewhim,
andwe send our sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
