F
rench construction group Ponticelli
Frères has used a Terex AC 700
all terrain crane to help with a
restoration project on the Panthéon, a
famous church in France.
The Panthéon is on the Montagne
Sainte-Geneviève hill and is the burial
place of a number of well-known and
honoured people in French history. It was
built between 1764 and 1790 and designed
by French architect Soufflot. Over the
years the church’s stability has been
affected by water seepage from leaky pipe
joints and swelling caused by the corrosion
of metal components.
To restore the Panthéon to a better
condition a restoration project was
instigated by the Centre des Monuments
Nationaux, the main caretaker for the
national monument. As part of the
project the colonnaded drum supporting
the dome was covered by free-standing
scaffolding. This was to ensure that the
building itself is not used as a support.
To lift the scaffolding into place
Ponticelli used a 700 tonne capacity Terex
