The largest of the scaffolding sections
was 20 x 20 m and weighed 42 tonnes.
It was hoisted to a height of 40 m before
being placed in position. For the lift the
AC 700 was configured with a 42 m luffing
jib and 140 tonnes of counterweight.
Dejan Kostovski, project manager at
Paris Charpente, said, “These manoeuvres
demanded the highest level of precision,
since the structure was assembled only a
few centimetres away from the building. It

was a job demanding patience that left no
room for error.”
Stéphane Yorgui from Ponticelli’s
engineering office, said, “Obtaining the
permits necessary to truck in and install
this kind of equipment in the heart of
Paris was no easy thing. But it turned
out to be the best option for this type of
project.”
The first phase of the restoration work
will continue until 2015. During this
time the Panthéon will remain open to
the public.
The scaffolding surrounding the
Panthéon weighed 350 tonnes and was
designed in the shape of a kitchen stool,
complete with 37 m high legs and a
circular hoop. One of the legs was used as
a base for a 96 m tower crane, a company
