him from Italy through Slovenia, Hungary,
Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark,
Sweden, before arriving in Pirkkala. This was
recognised as a Guinness World Record for
the longest journey aboard a telehandler.
The Danish market was described by
Tonning as“really tough”. He pointed out a big
difference between Denmark versus Norway
and Sweden by looking at the top contractors
in those countries.
In Norway, in 2012, the biggest contractors
were a mix of large Norwegian and Swedish
companies – Veidekke and AF Gruppen from
Norway, plus Swedish firms Skanska, NCC
and Peab.
In Sweden, the order is different with Peab,
NCC and Skanska dominating, and Veidekke
in the top six. They are all big companies with
cross-border portfolios.
In Denmark, the 2012 figures show a top four
where only one is not a domestic contractor.
NCC is the exception.
And the company in fourth place, Danish
company Pihl, filed for bankruptcy a year
ago, claiming that attempts to find a financial
solution to secure the continued operation of
the company had been in vain.
Pihl said it had, for a number of years,
expanded “far too aggressively” in Denmark
and abroad, among other problems.
Volvo’s Alström was a little more optimistic
about the country, though. He said “The
recovery seen in Denmark is likely to stabilise
and we see a clear shift towards smaller
machines and equipment for the agriculture
and rental segments.”
He went on, “In Sweden, many of the
announced
planned
investments
in
infrastructure and mining have not yet taken
off.
“Our view is that the upcoming elections
and possible change of government will hold
off any real growth for some time still.” The
elections will be held this month.
That’s another major difference between
Norway and Sweden, as the change of
government in Norway is seen as being largely
immaterial to planned projects. As Tonning
said, the current and previous governments
agreed on what was needed.
“The politicians have decided and the
finances are there,” he said.
MINOR CONTRACTION
Earlier this year, research firm Construct UK
looked at the Swedish construction market.
It estimated that construction was 8% of the
country’s GDP. In terms of total construction
output, after suffering what Construct UK
felt was a “comparatively minor contraction”
of 0.4% in 2013, its latest forecast predicted
growth of 1.6% in 2014 and 2.9% in 2015.
If Sweden’s experience of the financial
crisis was less marked than some other
countries, Construct UK reported that the
tighter financial climate restricted investment
in housebuilding. It reported that the
government had introduced a range of
measures to stimulate activity in the housing
market, including cutting back on the
bureaucracy involved.
When it comes to infrastructure in Sweden,
Construct UK said that there were predictions
that infrastructure would be the fastest-
growing sector up to 2017. This is fuelled by
the present government’s National Transport
Plan for 2014 to 2015, which included many
transport-related projects, including the high-
speed rail link from Stockholm to Linkoping.
In addition, work is underway on the
Stockholmmetro. A 6km commuter rail tunnel
is being built beneath central Stockholm –
the €1.7 billion Citybanan project.
