IPAF NEWS
U.S. AWP rental market chalks
up double-digit growth
reduction in fleet sell-offs. Similar
fleet growth is expected in 2014.
While the U.S. AWP fleet has
returned to its pre-recession size,
rental companies did not increase
the share of their business in
construction applications. Instead,
companies kept up their rental
operations in other sectors such
as industrial, maintenance,
Half amillion valid
PAL Cardsworldwide
There are now half amillion valid PALCardsworldwide, marking the
success of IPAF’s voluntary, industry-led operator training program in
keeping the use of powered access equipment safe.
“This is a tremendous success for IPAFmembers,” said IPAFCEO
TimWhiteman. “Ourmembers created and launched the platform
operator training program in 1991, not because
the lawmandated it, but because they had a
vision of a safe and professional industry. IPAF
manages the program on behalf of itsmembers
and the income is re-invested in the training
program and other safety initiatives, such as
theClick It! harness campaign, the spreader
pads campaign, or the accident reporting
project.”
A valid PALCard is international proof
that the cardholder has been trained to
operate powered access equipment safely
and effectively. PALCards can be issued
in standard or Smart PALCard (machine-
readable) versions. They are valid for five years
and can be verified online at
. IPAF’s
PALCard operator training program is certified by
TÜV as conforming to ISO18878. There are currently
615 IPAF-approved training centers in 28 countries.

Latest results from IPAF’s annual
rental market research indicate
that the USAWP rental market is
reboundingwith stellar growth
of around 10 percent in 2013.
IPAF’s 2014 Powered Access
Rental Market Reports reveal that
the Europeanmarket remains
stable, althoughmarked by stark
differences across different
countries. For the first time, IPAF
has commissioned research into
the Chinesemarket.
Interviews conductedwith
rental companies in the U.S.
confirm forecastsmade in last
year’s report, even surpassing the
growth rates predicted. Rental
companies expect themarket to
follow similar growth trends in
2014 and 2015.
As predicted in the 2013 report,
the U.S. AWP rental fleet expanded
strongly (5 to 10 percent) in
2013 and has now reached pre-
recession levels. This rebound
is flanked by two factors – a
slight increase in newmachine
investment coupledwith a
utilities, leisure, events, etc. This
shows that rental companies have
becomemore cautious over the
years and are keeping a good level
of diversification to avoid potential
business risks.
Average utilization rates
increased slightly in 2013, as did
rental rates.
