CSA B354 technical
committee makes progress
on standards
The Canadian Standards Association B354 technical committee met
September 17-18 in Montreal to continue development on standards
addressing aerial work platforms, mast climbing work platforms and
transport platforms.
The committee began the process to update and develop new standards
for these products in June of this year. It was decided that these standards
will use the ISO standards as a foundation, developing a design, safe use
and training standard.
With the active participation of many, these standards are progressing
at record speed with a projected completion in late 2014 or early 2015.
The move to ISO-based standards is an approach to bring consistency and
uniformity to these standards from country to country.
ICUEE
flashback
IPAF had a booth at this year’s
ICUEE show, and expresses its
appreciation to the Association of
Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)
for hosting associations in the
desire to raise safety awareness.
The show is the hallmark
event of the vehicle mounted
aerial equipment industry,
from the traditional utility and
communication aerials to the 300ft
plus Bronto lifts and everything
in between. Supporting products
like outrigger pads, personal fall
protection alarms and electrical
proximity sensors add to the value
for show attendees.
IPAF featured its operator training
program and AWP for managers
course, in addition to free safety
awareness information, which
includes industry best practice
documents for training, avoidance
of crushing hazards, use of PFPE
with AWPs, and risk assessments.
ANSI A92
main
committee
meets
Members of the ANSI A92 main
committee attended the annual
meeting in Las Vegas from October
27 to 30. This extended meeting
allowed subcommittees to meet
and continue their development
of design, safe use and training
standards covering all aerial work
platforms currently addressed by
A92.3, A92.5, A92.6 and A92.8.
They will follow the ISO standards
as a foundation for the new
standards and review language in
the current standards to ensure
all current safety issues are
addressed.
The standard development
process is lengthy and requires
volunteer members to commit to
on-going work between annual
meetings. The ANSI A92 and CSA
committees will communicate as
both work on similar standards for
their respective countries.
Haulotte
U.S. to
offer AWPT
training
Haulotte U.S. has begun the
process to have in place approved
instructors and evaluators to offer
the AWPT eLearning operator
training and issue PAL Cards to
successful trainees. It will offer
this training in both the U.S. and
Canada.
Marco Martinez, Haulotte’s
technical trainer, and Larry
Kavelman, field service
representative, will work to
become senior instructors so
they may train their customers to
become approved evaluators for
the program. Haulotte U.S. will be
ready to offer the training in early
November.
