A setback
O
SHA’s three-year postponement formandatory
craneoperator certification is a setback. Itwill now
likelybeNovember 2017before thismandate goes
into effect. The reason for thedelay is togive the governmental
entity the time to correct twoproblems in the rule that the
crane industry took issuewith: the requirement to certify “by
capacity” and that certifiedoperators are automaticallydeemed
“qualified.”Crane industry leaders arehopeful thatOSHAwill
re-issue the rule and remove the “by capacity” requirement and
clarify thedefinitions of certified craneoperator andqualified
craneoperator. While three years seems likeplentyof time to fix
the rule, weknow that the governmentmoves at a snail’s paceon
these types of things. Regardless of this delay, the crane industry
in theUnitedStateswill continue to encourage, promote and
support craneoperator certification.
We are looking forward to attending theWorldCrane&
Transport SummitNovember 12-13 inMiami. This is the
first time for this conference tobeheld in theUnitedStates,
and it’s exciting tobe apart of hosting such an important
event.Our editorial teams from
International Cranes and

and
ACT
will be there to cover all of the
presentations, andwe’ll give readers the complete rundown in
ourDecember issue. If youwould like to attend, it’snot too late
to signup. Shootme an email or giveme a call and Iwill help
get you registered.
HarryFry&Associates has been a fixture in the crane and
transport industry for almost 20years.He andhis teamhave
become a trusted resource in the crane finance arena. We caught
upwithFry to talk about equipment finance and the current
stateof themarket inour Interviewonpage 23.
Cranes are complicatedpieces of equipment andproduct
supportmaybe themost important part of owning a crane.
Inour IndustryFocus: Product Support, JohnSkelly talked to
a varietyof industry leaders about the importanceof product
support andhowvaluable it is toworkwithpeoplewhoknow
how to support your equipment.
Hal Lundgrenpresents our final Regional Report this year on
Mexico, where the crane and rigging sector is relatively strong
and theoutlook for 2015 is evenbetter.
And finally, what’s goingon inyour region? What types of jobs
are youperforming andhow are things looking for 2015?Drop
me a line!
