Checking in
O
ur
ACT
team is looking forward to the SC&RA
Workshop in Orlando, ICUEE in Louisville and the
AWRF Fall Conference in Los Angeles this month
and in October, respectively. It will be nice to check in with
everyone after the long, hot summer and get a feel for how the
rest of the year will play out in the crane, rigging and specialized
transportation industry. We will be providing coverage of all three
events in subsequent issues of the magazine. Plus, in this issue,
Lindsey Anderson compiled our ICUEE Show Guide, which gives
attendees and those who could not make the trip a look at what
equipment is being shown and other details.
In our Interview column, Jeff Johnson, executive vice president
and COO of Scott Powerline, told me that the “summer lull” is
over and that business is on the upswing. Johnson expects ICUEE
to be a strong event and that his company is showing almost
$10 million worth of equipment. He says the market for boom
trucks and telescopic crawlers is strong in the power line sector.
Everything he said bodes well for the industry as a whole.
Last spring at the SC&RA Annual Conference we saw all the
Job of the Year presentations and one of the jobs that didn’t
win caught our attention. It was a project to move several
huge apparatus known as “travelers” from where they were
manufactured to the new East Span of the San Francisco/Oakland
Bay Bridge for installation. Heavy Transport was one of the few
companies that had the equipment, resources and know-how to
haul the scaffolds that now provide safe access to workers needing
to inspect the bridge and make repairs. Terry White talked to
the major players about this project and chronicled how they
overcame all sorts of challenges to get the travelers to the bridge
site.
The self-erecting tower crane market continues to improve,
and demand for these cranes is slowly creeping up, especially out
west and in Canada. Luxury homes, student housing and resort
construction contractors have found these slender lifters to be
ideal. Utilization and rental rates are up as more contractors see
the efficiency of these cranes on their jobsites.
Terry White conducted our Used Crane Roundtable this month
and the consensus is that the market for used cranes continues to
pick up. Three heavy hitters in the new and used market sound
off about what buyers are looking for when it comes to capacities,
types and models in the used market.
In the next few weeks, we will begin the compilation of our
ACT

list of North America’s top
transportation companies. We will be mailing and emailing
survey forms by mid-October, and we hope everyone will
participate in this important annual top list. If you want me to
send you a survey please drop me a line at
.
And finally, let me know what’s happening in your region of
the country? New projects? New cranes? New people?
