IRN SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013
CHINA INTERVIEWS
Runshare began life as a self-propelled boom
specialist, making straight telescopic units for the
shipyards of China, a market segment that has since
seen a significant fall.
Subsequently, it has broadened its customer base
to include rental companies in China. It has also
added scissor lifts and is now making articulated
booms for the first time. The range includes 6 - 12 m
electric scissors, 13 - 16 m diesel scissors, 16 - 45 m
telescopic booms, and 12 – 24 m articulated models.
The massive 45 m telescopic boom was added to
the range last year. Although a very wide product
range, few of the models are produced in substantial
volumes.
Having largely completed its boom range, the
company is now adding truck mounted platforms to
its range with 16 m and 20 m platform height models,
the former a telescopic and the latter an articulated
model. The 16 unit is mounted on a Chinese-made
JMC truck, with Runshare agreeing a cooperation
deal with the truck supplier.
Mr Jun tells
IRN
than the present small production
space has really been about designing new products.
With a range now available, the new factory will
allow the company to focus on increasing volumes.
The company was quick to see export opportunities
– exporting its first booms to Peru in 2009 – and now
there is a rough 50/50 split between domestic sales
and shipments outside of China.
Mr Jun shares the widely held view that China will
one day be a larger rental and access market, but
for the moment he points to low labour rates and
the ingrained habit of using scaffolding as the main
obstacles to use of powered access equipment.
“I’m very confident about the future development
of the market – labour costs will increase and the
government is paying more attention to safety”, he
says.
Runshare is a company to watch. If the move
to the new facility goes to plan, then Sinoboom,
Mantall and Dingli could have a significant domestic
competitor on their hands.
