EXCAVATORS
30
Digging deep
hybrid components and a new Stage IIIB engine.
YoshihiroKobayashi, productmanager forhybrid excavators at
KomatsuEurope, said, “The newHB215LC-2will nowprovide
Komatsu customers with an even higher fuel economy. Actual
savings will depend on the application, and fuel efficiency is
particularly high when operating the excavator with hydraulic
attachments.
He added that the extra investment into a Komatsu hybrid
machine is typically recovered in less than two years.
Hitachihas also launchedahybridexcavator into theEuropean
market. The ZH210LC-5 hybrid combines a hydraulic motor
and an eco-friendly electric motor that Hitachi claims can
give the same levels of efficiency and smooth swing motion as
all Zaxis-5 hydraulic models. The manufacturer says the new
hybrid can reduce fuel andCO2 consumption by up to +31%.
Hitachi has incorporated elements from hydraulic, electric
and battery-powered excavators to create the Trias HX system.
This combines a hybrid system with an energy-efficient Trias
hydraulic system to achieve lower levels of fuel consumption.
Another new development in hybrids is the introduction of
Sumitomo’s first ever suchmachine.The 20 tonne SH200HB-6
was launched in Japan inNovember, and like theKomatsu and
Hitachi models, it captures energy that would otherwise be
wasted in the braking of the upper structure’s slewingmotions
with a generator and capacitors.
Sumitomo says themachine is powerful, smooth, controllable
and fuel-efficient.The on-board diesel engine isTier 4 Interim/
Stage IIIB compliant, and the company says the hybrid
component saves an average of 15% in fuel consumption,
compared to a standard SH200-6.
Purchase orders
With the construction industry witnessing the green shoots of
economic recovery, contractors and rental firms are once again
in themarket for excavators andmanufacturers arenowworking
to keep pacewith demand.
Doosan has seen increased interest in its range of excavators.
The South Korean manufacturer recently supplied a range
of excavators to DA Boyd Groundworks in the UK. The
company has purchased a new Stage IIIIB compliant Doosan
DX140LC-3 14-tonne crawler excavator and a new Doosan
DX225LC 22-tonne crawler excavator. A Stage IIIB compliant
DX255LC-3 25-tonnemodel is also on order.
Founder of DABoydGroundworks, DuncanBoyd said, “We
believe theDoosan excavators offer reallygoodvalue-for-money,
combining excellent performance with a truly durable design
and construction that allows them to work much more easily
than othermachines on themarket in the tough conditions we
work in, in the forests and elsewhere in our area.”
Liebherr has also just fulfilled an order for threeR946 crawler
excavators from Sibelco Deutschland GmbH, a supplier of
mineral rawmaterials for the ceramics industry.
The R946 has an operating weight of 40 tonnes and is
equipped with a 6-cylinder in-line engine, which meets the
requirements of the IIIB emission stage.
The excavators will be used in the claymining pits
in theGermanWesterwald region.
Hitachi meanwhile has again supplied
Swiss earthmoving contractor Paul
Werhli with a newZX130-5 through
Hitachi’s dealer in Switzerland,
ProbstMaveg.
Runway resurfacing
Excavatorswork round the clock
S
erving nearly 9million passengers each year, Il Caravaggio International Airport near
Bergamo and 40 km fromMilan, is the fourth busiest airport in Italy.
In response to the increasing demand of passenger traffic, the airport’s operator,
Società per l’AeroportoCivile di Bergamo (SACBO) has developed a long-term plan to upgrade
infrastructure and facilities. The current phase involves resurface the entire 3 km runway
during a three-week closure thismonth (June 2014).
The fleet for thiswork includes some 20NewHollandConstructionmachines, which are
working 24/7 to helpmeet the project’s tight deadlines. The fleet includes excavators from the
23 tonne E215C up to the top-of-the-range 50 tonne class E485C crawler excavator.
“High performance, reliability and low fuel consumption. These are the key strengths of
NewHollandConstruction equipment for our customersworking at theOrio al Serio Airport,”
said Paolo Entrade, owner ofMaren-CMO, theNewHollandConstruction dealership based
inCurno, near Bergamo. “At this specific job site each operation has to be completed very
rapidly, and themachines need to deliver a strong performance 24 hours per day.”
The contractors using themachines are Vitali andArtifoni, two companies that are part of
the consortium for the resurfacingwork.
“It is imperative for our company to use themost advanced and efficient construction
equipment in order tomaximise our productivity. We selectedNewHollandConstruction and
its latest equipment solutions, including theGPS satellite positioning and telematics systems,
tomeet the specific, high-tech requirements of the runway paving operations,” saidGiuseppe
Bonacina,marketing director of Vitali.
Roberto Paganessi, co-owner of Artifoni added, “Our construction, excavation and earth-
moving fleet ismostlymade of NewHollandConstructionmachines. They have proven to be
extremely powerful and they ensuremaximum speed and stability in everyworking condition.
Their unique combination of reliability and advanced technology is of key importance for us
and it is also highly appreciated by our operators.”
