CATLA REVIEW
other areas related to the practical side of
the industry.
David Rodrigues, commercial director
at leading Brazilian crane rental and
specialized transport company Makro,
emphasised the case for safety. A shift in
culture from trying to hide accidents to
one now where people are more aware of
them increases the pressure to conduct
safe operations, Rodrigues said. “Safety
will ensure the future of our company, the
industry, and of life.”
The three primary areas, Rodrigues
said, are standards and procedures,
equipment, and human factors. Key to
securing the future of the industry is
intelligence and, already, more than 40%
of Makro’s equipment fleet is monitored,
Rodrigues said, with the aim for all of it to
be monitored by 2014.
Also presenting were Javier Martinez,
ALE executive director; Joel Oliva,
National Commission for the Certification
of Crane Operators (NCCCO) manager;
Sarah Spive y, Modu lif t managing
director; and Vincent Stenger, Terex
Cranes product safety manager and
FEM member.

at XCMG Brasil, gave a presentation that
included detail on the activities of Chinese crane
manufacturers in Brazil and their rapid market
penetration. More than half the cranes operating
in Brazil are from China, he said, going on to
say that 2014 will see the first Chinese crane
produced in Brazil and a year later the first
Brazilian-built, Chinese-owned crane will
be exported
