UK’s HSE issues Genie
Z-135/70 safety alert
The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a safety alert
stating that all Genie Z-135/70 booms must be calibrated correctly and
those that have not been should be removed from service.
The advice comes during the HSE’s investigation into the collapse
of a Z-135/70 belonging to Kimberly Access at one of its depots close
to London, UK, in June last year. The operator died as a result of the
incident.
It follows a statement from the HSE in January, in which it confirmed it
was currently basing its investigations on the calibration of the machine
in question.
“The emerging findings from the HSE indicate that the operational
stability of a Z-135/70 may be compromised by the incorrect
measurement of the boom angle sensors,” said the latest statement.
It adds that the boom “became unstable and overturned whilst it was
working at or very close to its maximum height. In order to minimize
the risks of overturn, the machine safety devices and sensors must
be configured as per manufacturer’s settings, as prescribed by the
manufacturer in their Safety Bulletin 130005 dated July 29, 2013.
“Any machines for which the required calibration checks have
not been completed should be removed from service. Following the
completion of checks, the machines should continue to be inspected,
serviced and maintained as per the manufacturer’s requirements.
“Work regarding the manufacturer’s safety notice should only be
carried out in accordance with the recommendations in the machine
service manual i.e. on firm level ground, with suitable environmental
conditions etc.
“Prior to any functional checks being undertaken by an operator using
the platform controls, as part of the manufacturer’s listed inspections,
calibration of the angle sensors should be confirmed from ground
level using an inclinometer. The use of test weights might also be
appropriate.”
The New Delhi Police
headquarters has a new
look. The building’s wall now
boasts the largest mural of
Mahatma Gandhi in India.
The portrait, spread over
a gigantic 150 foot by 38
foot wall, has been painted
by German graffiti artist
Hendrik Beikirch, along with
Delhi-based artist Anpu. The
mural was part of a larger
street art festival that took
place in the capital and was
finished on January 30, the
anniversary of Gandhi’s
death. “The painting called
for the artists to work at
elevated heights and to do
this they used our Genie
S-125 telescopic boom. It
enabled the painters to work
safely and create a landmark
in India’s capital,” said a
Genie spokesperson.

Baku Airport
The ground level will be serviced
by the FS320Z, while the FS290
wheel version is to be used to
maintain the shopping and leisure
areas on the first floor.
“The Falcons were chosen
due to the dual power system
and the double jib,” said Brian
Falck Schmidt, sales manager at
TCA LIFT. “It was clear from the
beginning that the double jib offers
nothing but perfect access to the
triangular shape of the building
with its rounded edge and semi-
transparent roof.”
Denmark-based TCA Lift has
delivered two Falcon Spider
machines to Baku Airport in
Azerbaijan for maintenance work at
its new terminal.
The order included a Falcon
Spider FS290 with a 95-foot (29 m)
working height and a Falcon Spider
FS320Z with a 104-foot (32 m)
working height and a Z-boom, up
and over function.
The new terminal in Baku
International Airport is designed to
handle three million passengers
annually, with passenger
operations spread over two floors.
