OSHA’s fall protection campaign
to raise awareness and give

address this hazard.
Other top speakers include Brad
Boehler, president of Skyjack, who

and product selection, and former
JLG president Craig Paylor of
SmartEquip, who will examine how
technology can assist companies

and profitable.
There will be a panel discussion
on the subject of egress from
an elevated AWP, and breakout
sessions on AWPs and MCWPs.

AWPT eLearning module
available in Spanish
The AWPT eLearning module, which is part of the aerial work platform
(AWP) operator course managed in the U.S. and Canada by IPAF’s North
American subsidiary American Work Platform Training (AWPT), is now
available in Spanish.
The AWPT operator course is already in Spanish, fulfilling IPAF’s
commitment to the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) to provide training material to “vulnerable workers” in the US who
are not proficient in English and who may be at risk of not being properly
trained for safe work at height.
In April, the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released
new data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries about workers
killed on the job in 2011. The OSHA release said that: “Fatal work injuries
involving contractors accounted for 542 – or 12 percent - of the 4,693
fatal work injuries reported. Hispanic/Latino contractors accounted for
28 percent of fatal work injuries among contractors, well above their 16
percent share of the overall fatal work injury total for the year.”
IPAF will continue to work with OSHA on ways to improve safety by
providing workers with AWP operator training in a language and in a way
that they can understand.
Jim Maddux, Director, OSHA
Directorate of Construction, will
discuss OSHA’s fall protection
campaign at the IPAF US
Convention in October.
Spanish-speaking workers can take the AWPT eLearning module in a
language they are familiar with, as part of the AWPT operator course.
Tony Groat to chair Canadian
Standards Task Force
Tony Groat, IPAF USA, represented the Federation at the Canadian Standards
Association (CSA) meetings at the end of June regarding the development
of updated standards for AWPs and MCWPs. About 15 representatives were
present and small task groups were created.
It was agreed the Canadian CSA standards will adopt the international ISO
standard format and consolidate the AWP standards into design, safe use
and training, thus following the approach of the American ANSI standards.
The CSA MCWP standard will also use the ISO standard format as the
foundation and a transport platform standard will be introduced.
Groat was nominated to serve as the vice-chair for the B354 technical
committee. He was also elected task force chair for the development of the
AWP safe and training standards, and is a member of the design standard
team.
