SINGAPORE
Construction has
begun on the Jewel Changi Airport
(Jewel), amixed-use complex at
Singapore’s international airport.
Located in front of Terminal 1,
Jewel is designed to increase
Singapore’s appeal as a stopover
point for travellers. It sits on a
3.5 ha sitewith a gross floor area
of some 134,000m
2
across five
above-ground and five basement
levels. It will increase Terminal 1’s
capacity to 24million passengers
per year, while providing pedestrian
connections to Terminals 2 and 3. It
is also linked to the airport’smass
rapid transit (MRT) system
Attractionswithin Jewel include
a 40m high ‘RainVortex’, which is
expected to be theworld’s tallest
indoorwaterfall once complete.
Anotherwill be the Forest Valley,
a five-storey garden filledwith
thousands of trees, plants, ferns
and shrubs. Jewel will also include
shops and hotels alongside airport
operations.
MottMacDonald is the building
services consultant for the
development, which is due for
completion at the end of 2018.
CHILE
Airport team
Astaldi and Vinci Airports have
been named among a consortium
to redevelopArturoMerinoBenítez
International Airport in Santiago,
Chile. The project will centre on
the design and construction of a
new 175,000m
2
terminal, which
is scheduled to increase passenger
numbers to a capacity of 30million
a year.
Astaldi and Vinci Construction
Grands Projets will lead the site’s
construction work, which will be
delivered over the next five years.
The airport is the sixth largest in
South America and handled a total
of 16million passengers in 2014.
Xavier Huillard, chairman and
CEO of Vinci, said, “We have very
high ambitions for Arturo Merino
Benitez Airport, and this project
will now spearhead our airport
strategy on the South American
continent. Working jointly with
Aéroports de Paris, our task will
be to assist and encourage the
development of passenger traffic
whilst ensuring that standards of
service are raised to the highest
international standards.”
Airport operator, Aéroports de
Paris is part of the consortium, and
the agreement will see it manage
the airport over the next 20 years.
Constructionwork is due to start in
October.
INDONESIA
New island
A 50:50 joint venture between
Boskalis and Van Oord has
been awarded the € 350 million
(US$ 390 million) contract for
dredging work on the 160 hectare
Pluit City island project off the
coast of Jakarta, Indonesia.
The contract from real estate
developer PT Muara Wisesa
Samudra will see the two
companies design and construct the
artificial island, which they say will
involve the dredging of more than
20millionm

of sand.
They plan to use two jumbo
trailing suction hopper dredgers
for the dredging and reclamation
activities, sourcing sand from local
borrow areas. Soil improvement
and rock revetmentworks also form
part of the project.
Work is due to start immediately
and the project is expected to be
completed in 2018.
When constructed the new
island will be developed for
both residential and commercial
purposes.

Concrete
crowds
February’s World of Concrete
exhibition in Las Vegas, US
attracted 55,779 visitors, up
from just over 48,000 in 2014.
Some 1,459 companies exhibited
across more than 675,000 net ft
2
(63,000m
2
) of space, an increase of
more than 100,000 ft
2
(9,300 m
2
)
from 2014.

Exhibitions said it was the largest
World of Concrete in six years.
The company’s vice president
for construction & real estate
exhibitions in theUS,TomCindric,
said, “The excitement and energy
we saw at the World of Concrete
this year was like no other. We
are very pleased with the results of
the show in all categories from the
increase in thenumber of exhibitors
(up 200 companies) to the increase
in attendees (up +15%) to the
increase in the number of seminars
taken (up +23%).”
World of Concrete 2016 will be
held from 2 – 5 February, with
seminars from 1 – 5 February at
the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Next month’s Intermat exhibition
inParis, Francewill also feature the
World of Concrete Europe show.
