remote controlled J
CB excavator
U
K contractor Coleman&Company is using a specially developed
remote control JCB excavator sporting a 4 tonnemultiprocessor to
remove reinforced concrete floors during ongoing demolitionwork
at BirminghamNew Street Station in theUK.
The machine is a 21-tonne excavator that combines a JCB JS190 upper
structurewith a JS220LCundercarriage and rubber trackpads. It can carry
a 4 tonne attachment.
Themachine’s remote control system allows the operator towork from an
access platform above the beambeing demolished to allow close assessment
of thework. An integrated infra-red laser fence restricts the unit’s operation
to a designated safe zone, preventing it from operating toonear the edge of
the suspended floor.
Coleman is now in its fifth year on the site. Current work requires the
removal of 6,000 tonnes of reinforced concrete, with some beamsweighing
as much as 90 tonnes, with cross sections as big as 2.5 m wide by 1.5 m
deep. The work is taking place beneath a newly constructed, multi million
pound atrium steelwork structure that must be protected from any impact
from the demolition work. It is also taking place while 140,000 people
continue to travel through the station daily.

cranes, or whoneed to keep abreast
of developments in the industry
and who use the services of crane
