Trending
I
n the almost 10yearswe’vebeenpublishing
American
Cranes&Transport
, I don’t ever remember a timeof somany
mergers and acquisitions of crane companies.Over thepast
18months,we’ve seenmajor activityby ahandful of companies
that are in anobvious expansionmode, namelyTNTCrane&
Rigging,NSCGCrane&HeavyHaul andBarnhart. These three
companies have significantly expanded their service footprint
throughmergers and acquisitions.H&EEquipment,All
Erection&CraneRental, BayCrane andBiggeCrane&Rigging
also appear tobe in a growthmode, buyingnew cranes and
expanding their locations. What is fueling this rashofmergers
and acquisitions? What does itmean for the crane rental
market? We’re trying toget answers to thesequestions andwe
will keepyoupostedonwhatwe findout.
Another trendwe are seeing in the crane segment is crane
companies evaluating crane fleets, sellingoff assets that no
longer perform aswell as theyused to andbuying cranes that
better suit themarkets they serve. “If approachedproperly and
proactively, smarter asset-management planningwill allow
companies to effectively leverage secondarymarket demand to
createnew revenue streams andmaximize recovery for their
surplus cranes,” saidGardnerDudley, inour IndustryFocus:
UsedCranes onpage 32.Dudleydiscusses thebenefits of
this strategy andhow to truly invest in an assetmanagement
program.
Last spring,whenNicholasMatthewswasnamedpresident
andCEOof EssexRentalCorp.,we inquired about an interview.
He responded sayingyes, but that he’d like tobe in the job
a fewmonths before answeringour questions. Iwas able to
catchupwithhim the firstweekof September to talk about
Essex, its cranes and itsnew focus. I foundMatthews tobe a
very thoughtful leaderwho is intent onbringing anew level of
quality toEssex customers.
JohnSkelly, ournew assistant editor, is reallydigging in and
learning the crane and transport industry, which is agood thing
for our readers. Beingnew to the industry, it’s refreshing to
seehim research eachnewproduct category anddiscover the
nuances of each crane class, trailer categoryor industry service.
Thismonthhedelved into themarket for self-erecting tower
cranes and fleetmanagement software. Youwon’twant tomiss
these articles.
At press time, wewerepreparing tohead toDallas for the
SC&RACrane&RiggingWorkshop.We’ll provide a reviewof
whatwent on at that event inourNovember issue and let you
knowwhatwe’ve foundout aboutwhy themarket is somerger/
acquisition friendly.
Also, please let us knowwhat’s goingonwithyour company,
equipment andpeople.
