rom a rental perspective, how would you characterise 2013? It depends where you are
sitting, of course.
Most Europeans continue to wait for a genuine recovery, although there is hope in
the ERA’s forecast that growth will accelerate next year and in 2015. Among the biggest rental
companies here, the battle is focused on efficiency rather than expansion, as Loxam’s Gérard
Déprez remarked at the first International Rental Conference in Beijing in October.
North America continues to enjoy high rates of rental growth, with the industry confident
that these rates will continue to increase in the coming years. Rental in the US is expanding
a lot faster than GDP, and there are no immediate signs that the trend will stop. Even so, it is
reasonable to ask if such growth will continue: can increases in rental penetration - if that is
indeed what is behind the figures - continue at current rates?
Elsewhere in the world, rental is characterised by an upwards trajectory, even if heavily
influenced by economic highs and lows, with markets steadily maturing.
All these trends are evident in the latest ERA/
IRN
RentalTracker for Europe and our
annual World Confidence Survey, published in this issue (see page 17). More than 360 rental
companies around the world responded to the survey, so it provides a fantastic – and
generally positive – snapshot of current conditions.
And what of the past 12 months? A look at the most read rental stories of 2013 from
KHL.com reveals what it is that gets people interested, which, unsurprisingly, is ‘people’
stories and ‘big company’ news. When a CEO leaves a company, you can be guaranteed a high
readership – Manitou’s Jean-Christophe Giroux departure announcement in March was one of
the most viewed stories of the year.
Acquisitions by Stavdal and HSS, to name just two, generated a lot of interest, as did the
link-up between Hertz and APR Energy in the Middle East. Hewden’s ‘core products’ delivery
guarantee was another top story of the year, along with A-Plant’s launch of a new ‘express’
stories for city centres and GAM’s joint venture in Peru.
Manufacturer stories of most interest usually relate to bad financial news or significant
product or strategy announcements, such as Caterpillar’s recent engine ‘de-tiering’ story
and the end of the Kobelco/CNH alliance, both garnering many thousands of page views. Don
Ahern’s acquisition of Snorkel was another of the most avidly followed stories of the year.
These are the kinds of events that make it so interesting to report on the industry: we look
forward to bringing you the big news in 2014.
Finally, we wish all readers a happy holiday season and successful 2014!
