international
construction
UAE
Construction of the newMidfield Terminal Complex at AbuDhabi
International Airport iswell underway, and falsework and formwork
manufacturer Peri is designing and supplying systems to support the project.
Around 6,200 concrete slab tables are currently in use on sites helping to
construct the newX-shaped terminal being built between the north and
south runways. Scheduled to open in 2017, the centrepiecewill be a 50m
tall terminal buildingwith a total area of 700,000m². More than 1,000m³ of
concretemust be formed every day, and around 700,000m³ of concrete and
200,000 tonnes of steel will be required to complete the project.
GLOBAL
Cement
forecast
Average growth of +9.3% a
year has been forecast for global
consumption of cement and
concrete additives, with demand
to hit US$ 21.2 billion in 2017,
according to forecaster Freedonia.
TheAsia Pacific region is expected
to remain the largest consumer of
cement and concrete additives in
Freedonia’s data set, with demand
expected to increase +9.2% a year
reachingUS$ 10.6 billion by 2017.
But the strongest growth between
2012 and 2017 is forecast for
Africa and the Middle East,
where increases of +10.6% a year
are expected, reaching a value of
US$ 1.37billion by 2017.
In Central and South America,
annual demand is expected to
increase +10.3%, reachingUS$633
million by 2017, while demand in
North America is forecast to jump
+10% a year, reaching US$ 4.12
billion by 2017.
Eastern Europe is forecast to see
+9.2% growth between 2012 and
2017, reaching US$ 1.38 billion,
andWestern Europe is expected to
see +7.8% annual growth reaching
US$ 3.15billion.
Freedonia said growth in cement
use in developed markets would
rebound as construction markets
recovered, fuelling above-average
gains for additives. In developing
markets, it said gains were expected
to be prompted by a move to
higher-value additives to produce
higher quality concrete.

Agreement onunified
telematics standards
The Association of Equipment
Manufacturers
(AEM)
and
the Association of Equipment
Management Professionals (AEMP)
have agreedon a set ofmachinedata
for on-board telematics systems.
Many
manufacturers
offer
telematics systems to allowmachine
owners to remotely monitor their
equipment. Such systems includean
array of data such as temperatures,
hours worked alarms & warnings,
and geographic position if a GPS
element is included.
However, the increasing number
of different systems on the market
and the lack of a unifying standard
on common data and reporting,
has made it increasingly complex
for owners to use these asset
management tools.
Theassociationshave identified19
datapointswill bepart of a standard
being developed and maintained
by the two Associations and their
members. The new standard will
also define a format for fault codes.
However, the standard will not be
applicable to cranes and, “possibly
other niche products.”
The AEMP said its original
telematics data standard will
be incorporated into this wider
initiative. Data will be provided
to the end user via an Application
Program Interface (API) server to
server data sharing standard. The
data sharing standard will include
standardised protocols for the
transfer of telematics information in
mixed equipment fleets to end user
business enterprise systems.
These protocols will allow end-
users to employ their own business
software to collect and analyse asset
data from mixed equipment fleets
without the need for customisation
work across multiple telematics
provider applications.
The AEM and AEMP went on
to say a developer group would
be set up to work on industry-
wide integration of the standard,
future versions and introduction
dates. Another task force will be
brought together to set the data
transfer/conversion security plans
and a governance groupwill also be
assembled to ensure adherence to
technical specifications.
