W
ith summer upon those of us in
the Northern hemisphere perhaps
there is room for a lighter topic this
month. For some time I have been drawing
analogies between crane manufacturers and
car makers. Other than a way of combining
an interest in both industries it is a potentially
thought-provoking activity. To start with the
idea is simply to take the name of a crane
manufacturer and consider which car manufacturer you would
most closely associate it with or relate it to. At first instance just do
it quickly in a way that elicits your immediate response, like Word
Association but confined to car and crane brands.
After that, with further consideration, things may become more
definite, or not. With many aspects to consider, where to begin?
How about perceived quality and market reputation. Others might
be nationality of the manufacturer or geography, company history,
acquisition strategy and types of product offered.
If nothing else, it could be a lunchtime discussion with
colleagues and friends in the industry. Beyond a handful of
manufacturers it seems likely that there will be little consensus. It is
interesting to see elements of character and image and many other
traits that might be presented as rationale behind choices.
Here are some suggestions: Would Liebherr be Mercedes,
Tadano-Toyota? Terex Cranes might be VW Audi Group, or would
it be GM or Ford? At the same time, which of these would fit
Manitowoc? Both are headquartered in the USA but have strong
roots in Europe. What about Link-Belt and where would you put
Chrysler? Could Sennebogen be BMW or Porsche? Would Ferrari
pair with its namesake? The list goes on. With Tadano would you
go deeper and include Toyota’s Lexus brand as Tadano Faun?
I hope that there is more mileage in this and I welcome your
views and suggestions. It would be great also to get input from the
manufacturers, indicating how they perceive themselves.
