hen writing this at the end of October
I was just back from Amsterdam in
the Netherlands where the World
Crane and Transport Summit was held for the
third time. A pictorial review appears on pages
33 and 34. It was great to meet so many leading
players in the lifting and specialized transport
industry from around the world. At the SC&RA
Crane and Rigging Workshop a few weeks
earlier it was the same story. A review of that event begins on
page 55. A more optimistic mood about business prevailed at both
events, albeit with talk of a few geographical areas where there is
still little or no sign of improvement.
In a similar vein, our annual
IC
m20 ranking this month of
the world’s largest crane manufacturers by sales revenue, echoes
the above, as do the crane manufacturer’s third quarter results
first mentioned last month. It is still all very much a mixed bag of
performance highs and lows that has been similar for a year or so
now. For full details see the
IC
m20 feature on page 40.
Having a positive effect are links to the energy sector which is
a key theme in the industry. Link-Belt, Manitex and Manitowoc,
to name just some, have seen strong growth largely attributable
to this. In terms of equipment, the rough terrain crane sector
benefits greatly. The feature on page 15 outlines developments that
include product range expansion at the top end of the capacity
scale and the rise of Chinese manufacturers in this sector.
Also linked to the energy sector is self propelled modular
transporter, featured on page 23. Load out operations with large
oil platform decks and similar constitute a large proportion of
the work for this versatile and capable equipment. A couple
of major orders recently for hundreds of lines of new SPMT,
placed by Roll-Lift and Mammoet, and a landmark delivery
to Sarens, underline the industry’s confidence in this method
of transport. Even the other two main features this month –
on below the hook lifting equipment and Marco van Daal’s The
Knowledge, about alternative lifting methods – have a leaning
towards the energy sector.
