‘In the moment’
E
arlier this month, a video was posted to my Facebook wall (you’ll see
the irony in that sentence shortly) about living in the digital age. It was a
short 2-minute clip about how all of us are losing what’s here and now
due to our incessant use of all things mobile.
Watching the short film, I couldn’t help but nod in relation. “Yep, I’ve
definitely taken photos to ‘capture the moment’ instead of ‘live in it.’” “Oh,
that’s smart, he’s taking a video of their engagement WHILE proposing to her.”
All right, so the latter is a little extreme, but you get my point. The film almost
wanted to make us feel guilty for having a mobile device within arm’s reach. A
“calling device” that 1. Records video. 2. Takes photos. 3. Allows us to upload
said video or photo immediately to whatever Internet hole we want. And 4.
Then allows us to share, ‘Google,’ or do a myriad of other tasks related or
unrelated to whatever we were doing in the first place.
Yes, it drives me crazy when I’m with someone and they are glued to their
mobile. “DING,” Facebook this. “Dong,” SMS that. “Beep,” you have an
Instagram, Twitter, e-mail or online dating website notification.
There’s a time and a place for it all, and while some of us are too busy taking
photos with our new VSCO camera application, I don’t see others rushing their
35mm film – or 110, for that matter – to the local processing center. Digital
media has changed the way we interact, both professionally and personally.
It is up to the beholder to monitor their usage and (their possible subsequent
rudeness.)
But, professionally, our digital era has allowed us to reach far beyond the
scope of traditional media. If I get a Google alert sent to my e-mail inbox, I
know there’s been a company or piece of equipment mentioned somewhere
on the web. That allows me to make a phone call and hopefully get a story,
which I can then immediately upload to
and feed into Twitter
and Facebook. Any of
ALH
’s followers can then click and read.
Which brings me to the point of this long, rambling pro/anti-digital rant. Rich
media allows us extra insight into what we enjoy. And if you’ve read this far,
I’m assuming you enjoy
Access, Lift & Handlers
. And if you enjoy
Access, Lift
& Handlers
, then I believe you will enjoy our new digital tablet edition (available
on iPads, Androids and the like – just search the store for the magazine’s title
or “KHL Group” for our sister publications.)
This printed format isn’t going anywhere – don’t worry – but our new tablet
edition will bring you more of what you want and what you like. Features and
stories in our tablet format will have videos, extra images, interviews and
more; things we literally can’t print on a page. I hope you find the additional
information useful and insightful, but I also say that with a stamp of caution: I
welcome you to get lost in the digital pages of
ALH
– but also be present and
remember the moment.
Thanks for reading.
