CONSTRUCTION HOISTS
Climbing to the sky
O
n 400 Park Avenue South in New York
City is a 40-story condominium and
residential rentals project located
in Manhattan at the corner of Park Avenue
South and 27th Street. Units will range from
one bedroom to five bedrooms with prices
reportedly ranging from $1 million to $10
million.
Universal Builders Supply was awarded the
contract for the hoisting and protection work,
which included a three-car hoisting complex,
a two-car subgrade hoist as well as sidewalk
bridge, roof protection and other protection
work associated with the project.
The major above grade hoisting complex
consisted of the UBS high capacity common
platform solution located in the construction site
within an inside corner of the building on the
southwest facade of the building, with one dual
and one single Alimak Scando 650 Hoists.
A large loading dock complex, complete with
overhead protection, ramps and stairs was
constructed on the ground floor to provide
access to the hoists, with the common platform
having landings at all floors from the 2nd to the
41st floor. The overall lifting height of the hoists
was approximately 450 feet.
The west dual hoist was custom designed
and built to support 7,000 pounds capacity,
328 feet per minute as a dual personnel
and material hoist with inside clear cab
dimensions of 18 feet long by 4 feet,
11 inches wide and 9 feet, 2 inches
high. The front and rear gates were
able to open to nearly the full
interior height of the cab, with
corresponding custom designed
and fabricated landing gates on
the common platform.
The south single hoist was an
extended length 7,000-pound
capacity, 328 feet per
minute dual personnel
and material hoist,
with an inside clear
cab dimension of 16
feet, 4 inches long
by 4 feet, 11 inches
wide by 7 feet, 6
inches tall. All cars were
equipped with overload
sensing devices and manual
controls with stop-next-
floor capability.
