machines areWesternEuropemainly to rental
companies.The second largest is theMiddle
East where the bigger capacity is required for
construction, and inAfrica for somemining
applications.
Concerning high capacitymachines, this
month (September)Manitou is launching
the heaviest telehandler in theworld at the
ElectraMining exhibition inSouthAfrica.
TheMHT-X 14350 has a load capacity of 35
tonnes, amaximum lifting height of 13.6m
and amaximum outreach of 8.5m.
Mining is amajor application for these
large telehandlers with a range of attachments
like tyre, cylinder and reel handlers.Oil& gas,
container handling for themilitary and port
application are also common.
The capacity of thesemachinesmeans they
are starting to challenge largermobile cranes.
A company spokesman adds, “BecauseMHTs
are handling heavy loads,we are following
theEN13000 formobile cranes for these
kinds ofmachines.Themachinewill stop in
consideration of the theoretical load chart.”
Until thismonth, the 22.5 tonne capacity
MHT 10225was its biggest telehandler.
Lower down the six-machineMHT range,
plans are afoot to evolve theMHT 780 to
MHT 790with a IIIB engine. In addition,
“We keep developing nine tonnes capacity
following the launch of theMHT 1490 this
year atConExpo, used for bridge and road
maintenance or construction.”
XtremeManufacturing also produces one of
theworld’s biggest telehandlers.
Introduced atConExpo 2014 as theXtreme
XR6538, themachine has since undergone
full testing andhas been up-rated to a lifting
capacity of 70000 pounds (31.7 tonnes).This
is a 5000 pound (2.26 tonne) increase in lift
capacity.Themachine is nownamedXR7038.
Merlo’s highest capacity telehandlers are
found in itsHM series, incorporating the
5 tonne, 18mP50.18HM; the 6.5 tonne,
14mP65.14HM; and the 12 tonne, 10m
P120.10HM.The series has been designed
tomaximise productivity and reduce fuel
consumption.Comfort has also been an
important part of their development,
including the largest cab on themarket, at
1010mmwide, and a joystick on the armrest
as standard.
In the comingmonths, and before the end
of the year, the companywill start production
of its new generation of heavy dutymachines
with a range of upgrades including its
CDC system that automatically recognises
attachments and provides a load detection
system.
High capacity
JLG’s highest capacity telehandlers are the
G12-55A and theG10-55A. Its highest
capacity Skytrak brand telehandlers are the
10042 and the 10054.
TheG12-55A features a 12000 pound
capacity and lift height of 55 ftmaking it
ideal for heavier applications, such as bridge
construction, framing, shoring,wind farm and
steel work applications.
JLG’s SkyTrakmodel 10042 all-wheel steer
telehandler canhandle 10000 pounds and lift
loads higher than 42 ft.Typical applications
for large telehandlers include, energy
extraction and refinement, steel erection, and
non-residential construction, JLG said.
Genie’s highest capacity telehandler in
NorthAmerica is theGTH-1544. It can lift
15000 lbs (6.8 tonnes) up to 35 ft and can
reach 44 feet with 10000 lbs (4.5 tonnes). It
also can lift 3500 lbs (1.6 tonnes) extended
horizontally out 27 ft. It does all of this
without outriggers.
InEMEAR, theGenieGTH-5021R
has the biggest capacity in the range. With
stabilisers deployed, the 5 tonne capacity, 21m
lift height rotating telehandler can place 750
kg loads at itsmaximum 18.9m outreach.
“Our biggestmarket inEMEAR is the
rental sector for construction and oil and gas
plants,”saysCarloForini, director of business
development and productmanagement,Terex
AWP, “Rotating telehandlers are often used
to replace cranes where they can’t access.

compact footprint and compact chassis. This is
important inEurope,where customers require
manoeuvrability in confinedwork space.”
InNorthAmerica, the energymarket
certainly drives demand for large telehandlers.
They are constantly looking for better ways to
safely carry heavy loads around their jobsites.
Mr Forini adds, “Expect evenmore exciting
models fromGenie in the future.”
Staying on the high capacity side of the
market, there have been several other heavy
duty introductions – JCB, for instance, has
launched the 6 tonne lifting capacity 560-80,
andhas also presented an engine upgrade for
the 4 tonne capacity 540-200.
The newUSTier 4 Interim/EUStage IIIB-
compliant 560-80 is targeted at industrial
lifting applications,with amaximumheight
of 8.1m.
Magni has launched the 23m reachRTH
5.23,whichhas a 5 tonne capacity.Developed
withEuropean rental companies inmind, the
machine ismounted on a smaller chassis than
its standard counterpart.

Bobcat has launched new advanced
versions of the company’s two largest
rigid frame telescopic handlers –
the new T40140 14m and T40180
