manuals and training videos. This ever-
expanding lineupof products enables
companies to conduct internal training,
improve safety, generatemore business
and raiseproductivity.
New in2014was the
CraneWire
Rope InstallationGuide,
produced
in cooperationbetweenSC&RA and
Python Industries. In addition todetailed
instructions for installationofwire
rope, the guide includes instructions for
ordering andproper steps for inspecting
wire rope.
After their release in late 2013, SC&RA’s
“OperatingCraneAroundPower
Lines” video and companion40-page
bookletwere embracedby the industry
as a response to the growingnumber
of fatalities involvingpower lines.
The InternationalUnionofOperating
Engineers nowuses the video in its new
Crane SafetyTrainingprograms.
Of all the SC&RATransportation
Groupproducts, the
Oversize/Overweight
PermitManual
is themost popular. The
transition to anonline subscriptionhas
made it an evenmore valuable tool. It
includes updates from the 50 states, the
District ofColumbia, the 10Canadian
provinces and territories concerning
changedpermit requirements, costs,
equipment requirements, escort car
requirements, hours of travel andother
procedures formovingor securing
permits for over-dimensional loads.
Applying our knowledge
A tremendous amount of information
was disseminated throughout the safety,
inspection, certification and training
worlds in2014. Events like the SC&RA’s
Transportation Symposium andCrane&
RiggingWorkshops aswell asKHL’s own
WorldCrane&Transport summitwere
particularly educational.
We sawmemorabledemonstrations
fromCpt. BrentWise of Tech Safety
Lines and theDallas FireDepartment
on fall protection; eye-opening and
electric video clips presentedbyBill

cranewhenpower lines arenearby; and
responsible rigging techniques from the
likes ofKnut BuschmannofUniropeLtd.
andKeithAndersonof Bechtel.
The year to come shouldprovide
noteworthyheadlines as early as January
when some of the amendments to
aforementioned rules and regulations
come out or go into effect. Formanyof
these issues, as they say: the ball is in
their court.
